    What motor, year and transmission?

    Oops!

Sorry, I just read the header!

I'm not a V8 person, I'm a 300tdi (diesel) owner. I'm sure someone with V* knowledge will be along shortly...

    What V8 - they had 3 variants - a 3.5, a 3.9 (v belt), 3.9 (serp belt).

Like wise the D1 has three basic models - preupdate (3.5), Interim (3.9 vbelt) and Update (3.9 serp).

The first two had Lt77 gearboxes and the Updates R380.

    Likewise - 2 door/4 door.

Let us know and we can help you better .

    Great choice for first car!
    I had a 93 V8 and it was fantastic!
    The good?
its very comfortable on and off road,
all the engines are very simple and robust. ( Heat is the only concern)
all the gearboxes work well, my Lt77 was a joy to shuffle along..

    The (not so) bad?
it could be 30 odd years old...

There is no doubt it will cost you money,, maybe the Alpine windows have some rust,, ( or the rear floor )
but if you take your time and do your research,, everything that could possibly be wrong with it,,

has already been fixed by one of our members.

The early pre-update models are legendary off road,, but steer clear of slalom events

My biggest mistake was not checking well enough for rust. Because of the alloy outer panels things can look good, have a good check around window rubbers (seen lots with rust around the windscreen surround), floors as mentioned and alpine windows. I found rust behind the front guards on mine.
No experience with the V8 but I'm new to Land Rovers myself and they are pretty easy cars to work on, parts are reasonable and generally easy to get. I reckon it is a good choice to cut your teeth on, and probably knuckles

    Hi mate,

I am no expert but I would suggest:

Replace radiator hoses - they often look okay but they deteriorate from the inside.
Get the radiator rodded (cleaned properly)
    Change engine oil and filter
    Change diff oils
    Change gearbox oil
Check all of your belts - any sign of cracks replace
I would be tempted to replace HTC leads and spark plugs
    Check engine mounts
    Check body mounts
    Check shocks
Pull up the carpet and check for rust

Personally I change oil and oil filter every 5000km. The rover V8 likes clean oil.

    Good luck!

Drive it, enjoy it, don’t overspend on it (it’s a fine line between replacing things for preventative maintenance and keeping costs down - personally I think this varies for different people based on their use of their vehicle) as you’ll never get it back - Discovery has a low resale value and the V8’s are particularly unpopular. Depending on your plans there’s plenty of used parts available, check Facebook Land Rover groups.

Check your fuel economy out and if it’s too ridiculous, make sure you go over the V8. There’s a thread of mine from a year or two ago which will have a lot of start points. Got Dads one down from almost 40L/100km when it was first purchased to 16L/100km now after giving it some attention.
    98 D1 V8 bad fuel economy - 43.2L per 100km - vacuum advance?
