    200tdi D1 Cooling system question.

Hello all, I have just got the 200tdi D1 registered. Replaced all the cooling system hoses, Airtex water pump, has a 4 core radiator the has been rodded in excellent condition and a new 82deg thermostat.
I have fitted an engine guard temp alarm on the block and a Davies Craig low coolant alarm in the top radiator hose.
Now the issue I have is that I filled the system before putting the thermostat in then once in filed the rest from the nut on top of the thermostat housing so there should be no air locks.
What is happening is that when filled to the top the coolant slowly drains down to the catch tank and the level in the top hose goes down and the low coolant alarm goes off. It takes about 20+ km of driving and then going up hill to just barely get the thermostat to open, then the alarm ceases. Normal cruising temp is 78deg and about 80deg if under a bit of load. I have to be going up a very long hill to get it over 82deg. So what is happening is that once the thermostat has closed the fluid must drain back down to the catch tank and the alarm goes off again till the next time the thermostat opens.
Is this normal or should the system be a vacume and hold the water in the top hose even when the thermostat is closed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe rad or coolant tank would be a better place for alarm. My 200 tri also takes some time to warm up and generally runs cool in the colder months, 80-81 head temps, cooler around town or slow speeds.

Thankyou for the reply Rick. I think I will now put one in the top of the radiator. I bought the Davies as I thought they were the ducks guts.
In the old stage 1 the coolant seemed to stay up in the top of the thermostat housing all the time when I took the temp nut off to check. But for some reason it does not in the D1. There are no leaks I can see. I can only guess the catch tank is not airtight???

    Unhappy

Just a note for any new D1 owners here that don't seem to get any replies. You get heaps of replies on the D1 facebook pages.
Problem was a pinhole in the radiator.
Looks like not many older knowledgable D1 owners visit here anymore.
