You take the alternator to the nearest vice.
Wrap an old belt very tightly around the pulley.
Tighten vice onto tail of belt while pulling as tight as possible.
use rattle gun to loosen nut .
Check that shaft diameter is the same .If the same.
Vice versa.
if not see auto electrician and sort through his/her stock of pulleys.

Finally I think this can be finished. The pulleys came off both the old and new alternators with the rattle gun - I only needed to hold the pulley by a gloved hand.
So the original larger pulley (and spacer) are now fitted to the new Hella alternator - and the tacho reads correctly again!!
I am back to the 7PK1595 belt.
I do have a surplus Dayco 7PK1580 belt - it's done about 7,000klms - free to anyone in Cairns. (According to the Dayco Application Guide it suits Diesel Defender Jan 1994 to March 1999; or Diesel Discovery January 1996 to March 1999.) Just send a PM - not sure how I receive those but I guess I'll work it out!

place the belt over the pulley
then place the belt into a vice and tighten the vice while pulling the belt tight through the vice.
Keep tightening until the belt is tightly held.
Get a rattle gun and give a rattle onto the nut.
Voila.
The only er catch in the woodpile is that there are lots of offsets and shaft sizes for pulleys /alternators and you should measure before and after to make sure the old pulley and the new alternator give the same alignment. It will be immediately obvious if the pulley shafts are a different size of course.
To place pulley on new alternator do the same .
