    D1 restoration project

Well took the plunge and acquired this as a project car with my 15 yr old son who gets his licence next year (unbelievable - where did that time go).

Just had some near new Bridgestone 245/70/16s fitted to replace the Bighorns. I want my novice driver to have good road tyres.

The next job is to fix the driver side sill rust. Thankfully a number of UK fabricators have done this to death as a result of UK road salt treatment. This doesn’t look too complex. I have a MIG and have been welding bits a pieces for a few years.

Has anyone had any experience buying steel fabricated sills & A/B pillar boots from the UK?

Look like a tidy example! I've just purchased one in the same colour.

I had a thread from a long time ago with my first project but neglected to keep it updated, the car's much further along but has definitely taken a backseat in priorities.

    D1 First Build - Melbourne

About halfway through you can see where I addressed the sills, footwells and driver's side A-pillar base. Just with a cheap 135amp MIG welder and a pre-fabricated part from the UK like you mentioned. I got mine from YRM - Home - YRM Metal Solutions

Brilliant to deal with, good price and the part fit perfectly.

I'll be following this one, best of luck!

This weekend decided to repair the instrument cover or hood. We removed the steering wheel surround to get better access to the 2 front screws that hold the instrument hood in place.

Now the key won’t turn. It seems the immobiliser has activated. The fob still locks and unlocks the doors. We’ve already tried the battery disconnect. No change. Key won’t turn and makes a beep noise when key is inserted. It feels like there is something stopping the key being fully inserted into the ignition.

Any advice on this problem would be appreciated.

The immobiliser has nothing go do with the key not turning. Have you tried to move the steering wheel at the same time as turning the key? Mine does that some times and it is just weight on the steering lock.

Here’s a few pics of the structural reinforcement I did to the instrument cover.

Also put on some new boots, some 245/70/16 HTs. These bring the height down a bit and make the ride much smoother than the Bighorns.

This week had MR replace the vacuum pump as was the source of a long term oil leak and supply/fit used steering wheel. Gave the underbody a pretty thorough degrease. The leaks are now more of a weep. Also had MR change a noisy belt tensioner. So it’s riding much quieter and better on the road now.

Also replaced the side repeater, wipers and rear bumper stop/indicator, and gave the interior a really good clean. Last weekend we repaired front corner bumper piece. The plastic that receives the screw to hold it in place had broken off. Used liberal amounts of liquid nails to fix it back in place. So outside is looking ok.

Next job is steering strut, fixing the rear bumper (rust and it’s had a minor collision) and the sill rust. The front driver side mudguard and door will have to come off for the sill repair.

Then it should be good for a RWC.

Front driver side mudguard, and both driver side doors removed. The team that designed these bits did a really good job. It was all removed my 15 yr old and I pretty easily.

    D1 restoration project

With the seat, black fibreglass strips removed and carpet/noise mat pulled back, we got to see the good bad and ugly in full glory.

I’m an optimist, so despite a good inspection I must admit the rust damage was a bit worse than I expected.

But I’m confident this D1 can be redeemed. So not phased by what we found.

Still fully confident this is a really good project. A car my son will learn lots about and learn lots of skills with doing this. This will be his car. He’s very motivated. D1 restoration project
