    4-bolt flange need a washer?

    Hey folks,
I am swapping the rubber donut for a 4 bolt flange on my rear diff. I already have a prop shaft with the uni-joint flange on the back and just bought a flange kit that goes in the diff.
Is there meant to be a washer under the nyloc nut sitting on the flange? It looks like the nut would not make contact with the flange without a washer.
If so, why are all the flange kits i see online sold without a washer?
I don't have any vehicles with a rear 4-bolt flange to compare to...
    Thanks!

The rear 4 bolt is the same as whats in the front diff, but I'm pretty sure there is a washer under the nut.

Nah, the front 4-bolt flange is kinda star shaped and the rear is circular.

There is a spacer, part No. 539745, but this goes hand in hand with the square flange(the front star shaped one you referred too).

Dunno if it fits with the round flange tho.

Some of the info I found, say:

if the square flange is replaced with a round flange(STC4858 kit), the spacer that works with the square flange needs to be removed to fit the round flange

    Anyhow .. a washer part does exist .. part No. FTC5413 .. about $4-ish.

Thanks! I am hoping that i can use the washer from a spare front diff that has a square flange with the new 4 bolt round flange on the back diff...
Its kinda disappointing the flange kits don't come with a washer.

I have been reading this thread:

Disco rear diff uni joint conversion

Which says i might even need a spacer... but i guess it depends on what flange you use. I bought mine in a kit (STC4858) which negates the use of a spacer i think

Number 18 is the washer for when a bolt holds the flange on, bolted into a 12mm pinion shaft - but when swapping to a rear 4-bolt and using the nyloc nut the splined pinion is 16mm and i need a washer for that shaft is 16mm.
Yet none of the kits (including the one i bought) comes with the washer... Land Rover Parts - 20: DIFF FLANGE KIT - R/ROV (FINE SPLINE)(4 BOLT)(V8 PETROL MODELS)
Basically none of the local hardware stores have a washer that will do the job

Oh, I see what you’re on about. There are different pinion designs/flanges etc. Somewhere one of your diffs has been swapped out otherwise front and rear should match. Some pinions are setup with a bolt, and some with a nut. I’m not sure where you live, but you will probably pick one up at a nut/bolt specialist shop, these are not regular Bunnings washers, they’re an engineering part.
    Cheers

Yep, as Slunnie said, not a basic washer
You want a hardened and ground washer.
They are high tensile, heat treated and dead flat.
Your local engineering supplies or bolt shop will have one.

Yep, unfortunately both local fastener shops don't have it. So i am still chasing the part number to order one online.
