Check block flatness before you put head on. And head too if you are reusing.

I've always been under the impression that checking for flatness is not technically necessary if you are replacing the gasket just as preventative maintenance, and re-using the same head and same block...

How is everyone doing up their 300TDi head bolts if they don't have a degree wheel for a 1/2 socket? I'm trying to think of a way to make one...

easy enough to check block with straight edge and feeler gauge. head test for hardness etc requires professional equipment. if you are confident you never over heated the head then shouldn't be an issue. i was told to check flatness on block when i did mine but in fairness i had brand new head.

somebody with more experience will need to chime in. personally i would at least check the block, even though head is softer. Not sure if you can just check that with edge and feelers, so a real mechanic here will need to advise on that.

with regards to angle of head bolts can get creative. mark up sockets or bolts and have solder wire in certain places to reference rotation. bear in mind each flat face on the bolt head is 60 degrees relative to the next. you dont want to pull off the wrench and check each time though so marking up head or tying solder wire around will help reference the angle turned.

sorry at work. not sure how much sense the above made,

    The deck can move/drop.
I know of one, albeit a 2.8 block that dropped between I think 2&3 after being decked and ran for six months or so.
