Discovery 1 1997 V8 Engine Oil Cooler Pipes

    Disco 1 V8 1997.

It seems my engine oil cooler pipes are leaking. I suppose it has been 23 years.

Have done some research but not sure if the oil pump will need to be primed after I spend maybe an hour removing the oil filter and pipes and replacing the pipes carefully with new making sure not to torque the joins between hose and pipe. Lots of messy work and I always take longer than I should.

I know from doing the standard oil changes that you need to change the filter promptly so you don’t have issues with the oil pump when restarting.

So the question is - will I need to prime the oil pump (opening and packing with petroleum jelly)

    Thanks for the assistance

Is yours a serpentine belt engine? If so, the oil pump is driven off the front of the crankshaft and you won't have priming issues.

Are you sure - the only difference between the Preupdate Disco 1 3.9 and the update Disco 1 3.9 is the preupdate is V belts and the updates have sperpentine belts - otherwise the same engine.

My understanding is that the crank driven oil pump came with the 4.0/4.6 engines but I am not sure.

EDIT: And a correction I think - Ok just checked my rebuild book - Engine Numbers without suffix B - driven from the distributor drive. Engine Numbers with suffix B - driven by crankshaft. So I guess Suffix B engine numbers are serp belt engines?

    Did some checking.

My Discovery is a serpentine belt and it is a C suffix engine. Apparently has crank driven oil pump.

On my 95 V8 I got some new power steering pipes then took them to Pirtek to put some decent end connectors on them which will not leak, ever. Didn't repack anything, just fired up straight away no problem. That was 15 years ago and they are still fine with no leaks at all.

LRpete, can you advise please other characteristics of your suffix C engine please? Being offered a suffix C engine, (38DnnnnC) with confusing specs. Serpentine belt, distributor, 14 bolt heads Edit 10 bolt heads. 8.13:1 CR, 14CUX EFI loom. What year is yours, which way does oil filter mount point?
    thanks

Thanks. Does your oil filter point forwards or sideways/down? Looking to put the engine in a P6B, which will need filter to go forwards.

Filter points forward and down on an angle.
