    Respray advice please!

    Hi all,

V8 D1 ES spec, only 50,000kms on the clock. Interior is immaculate and the mechanical side of things is under control: always been regularly serviced by LR before I had it and I have recently finished replacing all mounts, bushes, bearings etc- anything that won’t have aged well.

Here’s the problem, paint is really poor. Clear coat has failed and there is the usual spot of rust on both alpine windows which i want repaired. I’ve been quoted $10k and $14k for a the rust repair and a closed door respray in the same colour.

Question is, is it worth it?
    Are these quotes reasonable?
I know I really want it done because I love the old girl to bits but I’m not sure I can really justify the expense when I think what else I could get for $10k! If it was a bit cheaper I could wear it. Please help!

    NO
When My roof went milky in my 2002 D2 , I painted over in Silver using spray cans from Supercheap. Aside from the weather changing in the middle and the temperature increasing to 40C , it doesn't look too bad.
I undercoated it , then colour coated then clear coated. It cost about $100 in materials including sandpaper to key the surface and scotchbrite and wax and oil remover.

You could have it wrapped of course for much less than 10K , about 3-4 AFAIK or DIY for about 1500.

The key is to get to it before the clear coat starts to peel , but you could also do it camo or matt black.

A repaint will add neglible value to what is now an old dunger.
Use rust converter on the sky light windows and paint over the rust.
    Regards PhilipA

Wholesale trade in value is $800 to $2200. Retail $2700 to $5000. Realistically, why spend anything on a 23 year old car. If traded in a dealer would send it to auction or a wrecker. It is not going to be a high value collectible classic.

EDIT: That trade in value is for the diesel version. Trade in value for the V8 petrol is shown in the guide as $0.

Thanks for your replies. I understand what you’re both saying, D1’s are never going to hit RRC value but don’t we all spend money on our 25 year old D1’s anyway? Surely everyone on this forum has spent at least some money on their 25 year old dunger this year?

I love being in my D1 and driving it both on and off road I just hate looking at it from the outside!

PhillipA- the clear coat has peeled and gone to powder everywhere. It was a beautiful, and not often seen, caprice green. I’m also flat out with work for the next few months and don’t have the time to even thinking about DIYing it myself.

I guess if I didn’t re paint it I’d have to get something else and for at least the cost of a respray would a D2 be the way forward or...?

You are obviously emotionally committed to repainting.
    Go for it!
Send pictures of the best D1 in the World.
Although IMHO the painter does not want to do it.
    Get a few quotes.

Talk to someone who does wrapping. About a fifth of the quote you got (must be using some really special paint, at that price). Huge range of colours/patterns available.
Say you love driving it but hate looking at it. While you're driving it, you're not looking at it! When you're not driving it, look the other way!

As everyone has said, get a cheaper quote.
I was a spray painter many years ago, that price would be for a concourse job, ie. fully stripped, rust fixed and flawless finish. As an example, a friend, still in the trade, did a vintage Daimler in metallic blue for a (rich) customer, fully stripped down bare body (ready for total rebuild) for $14,000. Huge amount of work, took nearly 3 weeks, plus 3 grand for paint. Looks awesome, perfect finish.

I would say about $5,000 for a reasonable job, Paint and sundries are expensive today, around 2 grand, but it's the time involved preparing, no need to strip off trims, bumpers etc. Shop around, visit the smaller shops in the industrial 'burbs, and yes, have a look at wrapping.

My Daughters Pajero had same metallic paint peeling, Maroon colour, we repainted in a weekend, good sand back and mask up, 3 litrs of colour, 3 liters of clear, done in my shed, so bit of dust, spent the next weekend machine polishing, looks great. cost, $1,700. yes, my labour was free.

The Camo finish sounds like a cheap option, if you do it yourself.

I got my bonnet and two front fenders done for $500 then the roof for another $1000 by a crash repair shop here in Adelaide. The next year the side doors and rear fenders done for $500 per side. Taping up not stripping windows etc of course but with the final cut and machine polishing it came up a treat. Never concours standard mind you, but hey it's a 4x4 workhorse not a trailer queen show car. That was five years ago and it still looks ok.

I also considered wrapping it and that does seem like a good option, would love to do carbon fibre wrap bonnet sometime.

On my D1 the clear coat is stuffed, I took photos and contacted a wrap company.

They said that wrap only works on clear coat that is in good condition.

I explained that kinda of defeats the purpose!

Went down the wrap path with the roof on my P38. It boiled down to I had to spend a similar amount of money to get the roof to a standard to get it wrapped. Finished up getting the roof painted black.

Wrapping an entire car that has existing bad paint is going to cost a motza.
