    Hello Dave,

When I first got the car - some months ago, I replaced the water pump and fan idler. I did check the serpentine belt back then and to me, it looked okay. I was apparently duped by appearances of the belt at the time.

Are the 300 TDI engines similar to the 200 TDI in needing their timing belt changed near the turn over of 100,000 Klm or every five years? If so, I might as well take all the components that are mounted to the front of the engine and change the timing belt while I am doing all the checks. I do not know the car's history. It has 239900 kilometres on the odometer and a May 1996 build date.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Good idea, I always do this on any rover as applicable. It gives a good starting point especially if your going to drive it for awhile.

    Hello Working On It,

Well - way back you mentioned how the lugs of the bracket on your steering pump were broken. After the serpentine belt shredded itself on the Disco yesterday afternoon - I had a closer look at things this morning. Armed with Working On It's advice I looked down at the front of the motor and I noticed that the smooth pulley was skewed. After manoeuvring my big paw down past some hoses and pulleys, I found out that the pulley was just hanging by the last of some threads on the single remaining bolt.

You can just see the skewed smooth pulley in the background of the photo. I have yet to check to see if the lugs have broken off - or just the other bolts have come loose and fallen out.

Is the smooth pulley on the steering pump? I will have to open the file that Don 130kindly sent me and spend some time ago. I have to dedicate some time to reading through it so I can familiarise myself with the 300TDI.

P.S. If all else fails ... consult YouTube. Yes - the smooth pulley is bolted to the power steering pump ... well it should be bolted to.... Accessed 24th January from, Question answered! How to change a 300tdi power steering pump - description only - YouTube . Now to check to see if the bolts have just worked loose - or the lugs have broken off the power steering pump flange... stay tuned and fingers crossed it is only loose bolts!

    Kind regards

    Hello All,

The bolts had worked their way loose from the lugs on the pulley. All three lugs are still there.

I did notice some lateral play when moving the steering pump pulley side to side. About half to one millimetre - is this too much? No signs of oil leaks from the pump itself.

However, the reservoir was pressurising and leaking fluid out. What is interesting is the reservoir is full.

Maybe things are not all as they should be within the steering pump internals? With a loose and out of alignment pulley things could have been thrashed about inside the pump itself for quite some time before I even bought the car.

I will check all the other components when I delve into replacing the timing belt. However, there are a number of other things higher on the list of priorities happening at the moment.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

The leaking PS reservoir could just be a dried up hardened o ring seal under the cap.
Mine did, replaced and zero PS fluid leakage. 50K klms ago now.

I can't remember the part number and just any o ring will not fit, it's very thin.
Start from the cheapest process first and then assume it's over pressurising, I reckon.

Note that I later found out that this cap/seal is also used in many BMW models too .. but wasn't excessively expensive from my regular parts guys anyhow)maybe $5 or so.

Should be zero movement in the PS pump pulley too(obviously other than it's rotational action! ).

Oh! one more thing. I'm having good experience with a ebay PS pump too if you want to replace yours if it's worn(which sounds like it is).
Mine had a mm or so of lateral slack, made a very slight graunchy noise when twirling wheel at stand still and leaked ever so slightly. $100 Cheapie fixed all that, now at 35K klms and 1.5 years old .. primarily around town, so lots of usage in that time.
My original intention with the cheapie PS pump was mainly to keep the D1(daily) going, and one rebuild the old pump.

From memory they a gerotors. While made to a high tolerance they are very simple and robust. As long as you feel there is sufficient power assist then it is likely the pump is OK.

If you are seeing power steering oil on the loose, check the lines in and out of the reservoir, and if auto gearbox (uses same oil) check the cooling lines for leaks around the metal-to-rubber joints, oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator.

And check power steering reservoir level by the cap dipstick and not by simple visual inspection, as it is possible to mistake the metal splash plate covered in fluid as the level, plate found inside the reservoir.
