Hello All,
I bought a D1 on Thursday- photographs to come.
There is a loud scream coming from the area of the water pump. Or immediately below the water pump.
Because I do not have a user manual yet I am not sure what the pulley below water pump is?
I checked the lower pulley and it seems to have a bit of play in it.
I just fitted a new water pump and I will reconnect everything tomorrow. It remains to be seen whether the new water pump has silenced the banshees. Fingers crossed. Or the banshee could be the pulley below the water pump - whatever that is?
Kind regards
Lionel

idler pulley bearings can do that as well
take the main belt off and try each bearing by hand and check the end float on the power steering pump and also the alternator etc etc

Hello All,
It has been an interesting day. I may have found the cause behind the Banshee in the system. It happened unintentionally and occurred after a few interesting events.
Today, I put in a new battery into my 1996 Discovery - it has sat idle for a couple of months. After fitting the battery I closed the bonnet and took the Disco for a spin in the paddock. The Banshee scream from the front of the motor seemed to be down in volume from the previous drives. I then drove the Discovery to its parking place and I went to open the bonnet. When I bought the car one side of the T- handle had broken off and a set of pliers needed to be used to pull the cable out.
Well today the cable moved; however, it did not allow the bonnet to lift up enough to clear the release latch. After posting a plea about how to fix this problem on AULRO and finding some suggestions via an internet search - I came up with a solution. The cable release latch allowed the bonnet to lift up just enough to fit my fingers in. With the sun in a different position I could sit down and clearly see through the gap between the bonnet and the bonnet catch rail. I spied three bolts holding the male part of the bonnet latch. I could reach the bolts with a 13 mm spanner and up came the bonnet - hooray!
One of the reasons why I wanted to open the bonnet is to find out why the steering suddenly made the transition between power to armstrong. No nasty noises - no smoke - just reasonable pressure on the steering wheel to OMG that is really heavy to make a turn!
Once I could lift the bonnet up again - I checked the power steering reservoir and it was full. I noticed the spare space to the right of the reservoir where a second battery could be fitted had a coating of oil over it. So too did the left hand side of the radiator just near the reservoir. It looks like the power steering reservoir is being pressurised and fluid is being pumped out under the cap.
I got back into the car and since it has been a while; I checked some of the electrical switches to reconfirm what worked and what did not. I flicked on the air conditioner and the fan. Very shortly afterwards a distinctly not good sound started coming from the engine bay. I turned the motor off and this is what I saw...
A disintegrating serpentine belt just might have been a contributing factor to the Banshee scream! Problem solved... maybe betwixt the two... the belt and the pressurising power steering reservoir ...
Well with the serpentine belt broken and now removed - the engine sounded a whole lot better! Goodbye Banshee. Just got to have a closer look at the power steering pump. If the power steering pump starts to pack it in do they pressurise the reservoir?
All I wanted to do was to have a drive in the paddock. Gotta love them Land Rovers!
Kind regards
Lionel
r
Belt screaming and frayed like that. I would be checking every spinning component using the belt. Alternator included.
Also on the bonnet catch , i removed the outer cable. Formed a loop of the inner and just had it hanging out of the front grill, you could not see it and worked a treat.
G'day Bazzle,
Thanks for the tip with the bonnet release cable. One thing to remember though is to unlock the car first. In the evening I walked up to the locked Disco and lifted the bonnet. I did not know they had an anti-theft pressure switch on the circuit under the bonnet. The alarm went off soon as I lifted the bonnet up!
Kind regards
Lionel
