    300tdi piston markings

Hi, I have an old 300tdi motor with about 400k on it that I wish to reco. I looked at the bores today and they appear pristine with hone marks cstill visible and no apparent piston slop. However to part number on the pistons is ERR2412. Most of new 300tdi pistons I can find online are numbered as ERR2410xx. Does anyone know the difference. I did see on one sight that ERR2412 might be for a piston/Con Rod combo.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tom.

I'd say it's original, factory build Tom.
This was mine when first opened up.

Thanks Rick and Dave. I am the third owner. I got it from a member on here (shining) who had it from about 99 (it's a 97 D1 manual). It was a goer, but it got boiled and the head has 5 cracks in it. I haven't pulled the pistons out yet, but I may reuse them if they are looking perfect. New Rings mains Big ends etc. I'll pull the motor in the next week or so and see how the internals look and go from there. As said, bores are spotless.

    G'day Tom,

Very interesting. I'm doing the exact same thing in my 98 Tdi at the moment. I was burning coolant out of the exhaust so just pulled the head. Gasket was perfect but like you, half a dozen cracks. I have very light scoring in cylinder 1 so will pull the pistons and plan to do rings and big end shells as well (with motor in place, 300k on my motor). I was just checking my pistons for play but am unsure how to effectively measure this and what is acceptable. I moved the pistons side to side which showed very minimal movement and north/south(length of car) which showed a bit more that way. How did you check your pistons for play?

    Cheers

Have a look on youtube - there are some examples there. A rough description is that when pistons removed, use on and place it upside down in the bore (about 2-3 inches down from memory) and measure the gap with feeler guage. - see the clip below from about 1:15
