If it was mine, I would be stripping the offending side down and inspecting as I go.
Cracked cv maybe?
Also - check wheel nuts, and possibly a wheel bearing. Jack up each wheel and spin.

Also the lawnmower noise was apparently valve clearances...I managed to get it into the shop at short notice because I wanted to get it fixed quick before the tracks close for the season now that we're allowed out for day trips. I'm a bit annoyed at myself actually because I wanted to fix this stuff myself and I would have been able to, it just would have taken a lot longer I guess. Well at least I'll be able to get a bit more driving in now before the season closures, about two weeks worth haha
The shop said they hardly see any D1 CV breaks, apparently they're a really solid CV joint, he said "jeez you must have been driving it hard" haha and I really wasn't and it's not as if I've got huge tyres on the thing they're pretty modest...in hindsight even on an easy track though I maybe should have lowered tyre pressures a little lower than road pressures it probably would have helped but honestly it was hardly anything that triggered the snap, super slow manoeuvres, so I'm thinking it was maybe on the way out anyway.
CV joints are not cheap hey haha I was going to look at replacing both CV joints and front axle with reinforced versions from Ashcroft maybe...then I saw the prices...WOW!

Errrr??? yes and no. As already said, not hard, but not a clean job when all the moly goop spills all over the place, get you get it in yer hands, and you have dinner to make 30 mins later!
(not that I'd know anything about that, tho! .... you like some Moly grease residue on your steak?
Do you have cover to work under at the new place?
Like Rick said, you'd have stripped it down and inspect stuff whilst in there, and probably found some other stuff worth doing at the same time that it's all apart, and it would have been a one month job waiting for parts for those other jobs .. etc, etc.
As for the cost of CVs, I have spares, got in case mine were worn or whatever, but mine were 100% when I recently did my bearing and shafts.
And looking at the prices of CVs now(compared to years ago when I had my RRC) holy flick! .. what used to cost $500 for a stupid little lump of steel, now like $80 or so. So yeah, get a spare coz they're cheap now, take it with 'ya on soe of those out of the way trips/tracks if you don't feel sure about the other. I don't reckon the Tdi has enough power to stress the CVs tho.

What stresses the CV joints (and other parts of the transmission) is not the power of the engine, not even the maximum torque available at the CV joint, which is ultimately controlled by the tyre adhesion and effective tyre radius, but is the shock loading when a spinning wheel suddenly grips.

Is it possible that the CV could have been really worn and on its way out, then something very minor just pushed it over the edge? Is it the kind of part that would do that? It's just that when it went I wasn't really doing anything...no spinning, no hitting anything fast, really just going over a slow bump in the track.

Oh what haha the garage charged me about 450 for the CV (part only) but they did a good job at short notice I can't complain too much...are they really that cheap now? I should get a spare!
I do actually have cover to work under at the new place so it's kind of perfect, I'm just not set up yet there's still moving stuff everywhere...when I'm set up though I'll be pulling all sorts of things apart.
Oh the lawnmower noise was valves by the way...did I say that already? Valves needed adjusting and that kind of thing, they were making such a sill noise, now it sounds like 300tdi music
