    S1 V8 idling issues

Hi All my mate bought a s1 V8 discovery recently and it runs ok on gas...mostly

but we are trying to get the thing back to full running order on petrol and gas.
there is a miss at idle.
flares on shifts from time to time
lacking power on both gas and petrol

there a few low hanging fruit like vacuum leaks which i will be dealing with but i also have a sneaky feeling that the ignition leads may be wired wrong.
I have attached a picture for reference. Could someone more knowladgeable on landrover be able educate me a bit on the landrover system.
If there is any more info i am leaving out please let me know.

    Still NQR :(

Hope the wonderful people of AULRO can guide me further

The idle issue has lessened when i checked and found 101 vacuum leaks, now fixed.
the distributor was also not timed correctly any more, also had the vacuum advance on the wrong side of the diaphragm.
the above along with new distributor cap and leads essentially removed the misfire.

BUT the idle issue is still there, is there a way i can check to see if the IACV is working as it should?

This car is also on gas and i have noticed that the mas airflow sensor has a red cap on one end and a screwdriver has been put throw it and it looks like there is some kind of adjusting screw but from my knowledge this inst meant to be played with. cloud this be my problem?

i also am curious if there is anyway i can attach my laptop/ diagnostic computer to the car to read sensors/codes (less expensive solution is preferable)
i know this isn't OBD compatible

edit: forgot to mention the car ran on exclusively gas for some time, and is now being put back on petrol.
gas does not run anymore as it had issue of its own and i am having the system removed before long.

I suggest that you at the very least put a few bottles of injector cleaner through it but preferably have the injectors ultrasonically cleaned.
I recall many years ago selling a set of injectors to a bloke in Melbourne whose injectors were all seized from disuse.
Alternatively buy a set of Bosch "yellow" injectors for a Ford V8 from the USA Ebay.
They are the same flow as the Lucas squirters and have 4 holes for better atomisation.

Find some with the slot for the clip, the same square injector plug and the same length. They are there.

Have a read of the following links. The ECUMate is no longer available, but you may find a used one at a price more than the car is worth.
Not sure about the RoverGauge, it may still be available if you can find the correct plug.

The MAF is adjustable using the screw you see.
Australian Pollution regulations required 0.5% unburned hydrocarbons which made the idle really bad. Most adjusted them up to 1-1.5% or so using teh screw.

You could once upon a time buy a 14CUX diagnostic reader from the USA which was fitted to all US spec RRCs. However the ECU does not remember anything and they only work while running. I never had a code on mine until I unplugged the MAF. Also the plug for the reader was not on RRCs anyway and you had to rig up a connection. I don't know about D1s.

There is a 14CUX diagnostic on line AFAIR on the UK Morgan site.
    Regard sPhilipA
If you send me your email address I can send you some light reading on 14CUX diagnostics and system description which I have kept on my computer for the last 8 years. I can't believe I did that.
