Hi All. Some time ago my 99 Discovery 1 (300 Tdi) developed a grinding noise from the passenger side of the motor. This followed an episode on a hot summers day when the motor overheated slightly as my wife was towing a fully laden horse float. At first I though maybe a belt running out of alignment, but ciuld find nothing. The noise has become much worse. In all other respects the motor runs fine. The noise now drowns out the other engine sounds completely. Any ideas anyone?

Using a screwdriver to listen I figured water pump and alternator on way out. Pulled the serpentine belt off and checked both and found lots of movement in water pump, but no leak. New pump ordered. The alternator pulley has no play, but sounds rough when running using a long driver. I think this is original alternator (it's a 99 model) and I have had it for 15 years, so assume OEM. It has done 285Km. Should I be looking at replacing the alternator?

Cheers
