    Tempted by a V8....

    Hi All, looking at purchasing a Series 1 Discovery.

    Seen a V8 for sale with 335,000kms on the clock.

    Any advice at all? worth buying just for heading to the local beaches?

    IMHO there are plenty of V8 D1s around at cheap prices with WAAAAY less Kms than that one.
    Unless the engine and transmission have ben rebuilt within a reasonable time I would avoid it.

    A tired auto will cost $5000 to replace and at 335KK it will be very tired unless replaced.

    not to mention the cam having lumps like the Nullabour....
    check for rust under rear carpet and surrounding the Alpine windows.

    Pretty reliable if looked after.
    One of my brothers has one,has had it since almost new,done close to 400 000Km.

    Only real issue was coolant weeps,he replaced the head gaskets.
    Replaced cams as it was apart,they were worn but not bad.
    That was at around 300 000km.

    Drive train still original,does all the servicing and r epairs himself.
    It’s a manual,3.5l.

    Not bad on fuel either.

    My 1995 V8 and auto have never needed anything doing to them apart from regular servicing and a new TPS. Fitted a new radiator a while back with EL fans and Scorcher dissy, ACT induction kit, free flow exhaust and new oil cooler lines. Everything else is as it left the factory, and it was a daily driver for more than 10 years. Thirsty around town for sure, but hey it's a 2 ton 4x4, and fuel's cheap enough these days anyhow. Lovely to drive with that distinctive old skool RV8 soundtrack that always gets attention from today's 'silent majority'.

    The cam problem in RV8 is very well known a stems from the original Buick/Oldsmobile design where the block is really too small and the was no room for a large diameter on the lobes. Mine was worn at 200KK and I owned and serviced the car every 5-7Kk with good quality oil from 76Kk.

    You can be fooled as the performance just drops off slowly and is not noticed but when you put a new cam in , boy can you tell the difference.
