Fuelling problems 300 TDI - sedimenter

Interesting thing to look for if you have fuelling problems. I have been having problems with fuelling on my 98 Disco1 300 TDI. It would tick over, but as soon as throttle applied, it would cut out. I replaced fuel filter and lift pump. No change. I removed the plastic plug from the rear sedimenter and found the plug had a full length split in it. I assume this was letting air in. I had nothing in my nut and bolt collection that would fit ( I have since found out through this site that it is 5/16 BSW). I bodged it up with PTFE tape, put it back in and problem cured. The Disco runs great. I need to get a replacement in a hurry. I think this is worth a quick look at if you have fuelling probs before you start pulling the rest of the fuel system apart.

Im having similar problems with my 98 300tdi.
I have tried 2 brand new lift pumps, bypassing the sedimenter and checking the tank sender for Air leaks and so far no luck. If I open the bleed on the fuel filter, instead of pumping fuel out when the car is running, it sucks asif theres not enough fuel getting to the filter. Im totally baffled now as to what the problem could be. Any help would be great!

It's worth trying, but maybe take the fuel cap off. Obviously only if the tank isn't totally full to the top of the neck.
At least check if there is some kind of vacuum effect due to a blockage you haven't yet found, ie. venting or something.

if you don't know of Brittanica Restorations on Youtube, have a look at some of his videos.
He's had a few vehicles there that have a similar lack of fuel pumping out of the fuel filter, like you have.
Only vid of his I can clearly recall, he ran an electric pump either in place of or in series with the lift pump.
I know you said you've tried two different lift pumps, but are they known to be quality items, or two either unknown of cheapies off ebay or suchlike?

Also, have you tried to blow compressed air back through the fuel lines towards the tank?, drain the tank .. etc.

The little banjo bolt on the fuel line where it joins the injector pump has a bit of wire guaze on it. Make sure it isn't blocked.

    Thanks for the replies.
Both lift pumps were oem spec pumps.
I put the second pump on as I was worried I had damaged the first new pump by priming the line for too long as I blew out the line between the pump and the sedimenter and there was a whole lot of air to clear.
Unfortunately the second pump did no better at keeping the air out of the system so I then removed and cleaned the sedimenter, that didnt help.
I then bypassed the sedimenter totally as I was worried that the new seals I put in the sedimenter had not sealed properly, that didnt help.
Finally this afternoon I gave in and ran 5m of new rubber fuel hose from the sender on the tank, directly to the lift pump and.....finally.....the system primed and when the engine was running the lift pump was firing fuel out of the top of the fuel filter bleed.
Test drove it and she drives perfect.
So until I can afford to replace everything between the lift pump and the tank....this will do!
