    Disco 1 hum/ whine

    Not sure what caused it but I'll do my best to discribe the sound. So there's a hum coming from my 97 discovery 1 V8. I can't seem to pin point it. Happens at even at idle and is pretty consistent. Sounds like an RC car or an electric drill. Or maybe a vacuum running in the other room? Sounds mostly like the whine a a bad power steering pump does but I don't think that's it. I've only had the disco for a week not even sure if it's been doing it the whole time or if it's just a normal disco sound.

    Check the alternator and idler pulleys, Could be a dry/seized/buggered bearing in there somewhere.

    Even happens at idle;

    Some things to help folks here to diagnose. Also what gearbox.

    Does it happen when standing still and give the motor a few revs? Does it produce the same sound when revving? ie. is it engine speed dependant?

    power steer box or pump; whine can happen, but will change sound when you steer even just a small amount. more easily heard at idle too.

    Like Trout suggested check serpentine belt system, AC/Alt/power steer/pulleys etc.
    You can remove serpentine belt and run engine at idle for a very short time. Say a few seconds should be enough. So with serpentine belt removed and motor idling does it still whine.

    Also .. check the most simple things too. Is the radio on? hum whine can be electrical interference! .. I know.. sounds like a silly one, but you want to check everything, if not already done.

    That's the easiest issue to deal with.
