Prop Shafts and Universal Joints ...........

Hi everyone - I will just leave this note here and I would appreciate people’s opinions on my recent experience with a well established Landrover mechanic on the Gold Coast. This was the first time I’ve used them.

I took in my Disco1 V8 for the fitting of a new pinion seal to the front diff and the replacement of the two UJs on the front prop shaft. A straight forward job that I nearly did myself. I supplied them with an original Landrover pinion seal and two heavy duty Hardy Spicer K5-A757 universal joints and new nuts for the prop shaft.

When I collected the car I spoke to the mechanic and asked if there had been any issues. I was told there were no issues.

When I got home I inspected the prop shaft. I was amazed when I quickly noticed it was on backwards, with the slip joint at the front. I immediately took the car back and was told that the Disco2 mounts it that way and it also stopped water getting into the slip joint. But they were happy to turn it around for me with the slip joint at the rear, which they did.

A few days later I thought I would inspect the prop shaft, just in case.....I was amazed when I noticed that the front UJ was a Hardy Spicer K5-A757, but the rear UJ was NOT. I went back to ask why they hadn’t used the two UJs I had supplied. I was told that they cracked a cap when mounting one of the Hardy Spicer UJs and they replaced it with a GKN UJ.

Having the slip joint drain makes sense to me, its just a uni-uni shaft so it shouldnt make any difference, where a D2 shaft can only go in one way.

I guess what else could they do if a cap cracked other than replace it. I would expect GKN to be a quality part, it is the go to part for things like rotoflex joints due to their higher quality.
    Cheers
