Anyone as stupid as me today? Battery Reversed when installing

Battery in the manual 300 TDI was gone so replaced it - however - the previous owner had set it up for non standard with the +ve to back right -ve back left, got the specified battery and put it in, didnt even cross my mind the specified battery would be the other way round i- wipers came on, couldn't start and smell of smoke.

Changed it back and the car started straight away (been a good three months) however, the alternator light was on. Went off when revving but came back on when coming back to idle. Am I right to assume it is a diode pack on the alternator? If not what should I look for?

Would this have also cooked the radio, didnt come on either.

    In anticipation, thank you!

    Standard is a 100amp I believe,

having said thay my mate runs an 85 amp with no trouble and I've got a 120 amp on mine, also no trouble, usual bit of common sense, the more stuff you have, get a bigger alternator. Obviously they get more expensive as they get bigger, I have heard that for $1500 a mob in the UK do a 4 or 5 hundred amp version, but that's at the extreme end of the spectrum

Yes, probably cooked the radio as well - sounds like a couple of the diodes went to god in the alternator - if you're going to the trouble of replacing it, I wouldn't use another MM unit either.

Remember when I bought it, got a second alternator which required a new pack, digged it out and this branded LandRover

Would appear the previous owner who put the replacement battery in also probably did the same thing when he changed battery - the posts were the wrong way and sizzle!!!!!!

SO been looking at replacement diode packs but these seem very thin on the ground and if I find a suitable one for either alternator (sic) do they come with the suitable speedo send on all such alternators? or would I have to get a LandRover specific pack with the speedo drive in. Even though I am selling the 300 TDi, still want to sell something that is mechanically A1 rather than with a $179 jobbie from ebay.

    I think tacho yes.

Any alternator can have the ‘W’ terminal added to it, but not all come with it as standard. The mod can be done at home if you have a soldering iron and don’t mind pulling the back cover off the alternator but if that’s not the case ask for one with the ‘W’ terminal on it.
