    LH Rear Window Regulator

    Hello All,

The first photo is a shot of how the window came when I bought the car.

This afternoon I went exploring. In the third photo a small proportion of the main arm can be seen through a recess in the door side. I snaked my arm through some access holes and found that I could move the main arm of the window regulator around with a high degree of slop. This movement was not transferred into any repositioning of the window. The centre photo is of what the rear window regulator should look like.

If it is as it seems - that the regulator is broken - can it be repaired or is it a case of buying a new window regulator mechanism minus the motor? Is it a case of unbolt the old and replace with the new. Seems a waste when only a couple of cents worth of plastic wheel is broken.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Lionel, there’s a thread on here somewhere about repairing D2 ones. Should be similar.

    Hello Tins,

Thank you for the tip! I found this link with Rovernaut's design for a new runner .. Accessed 24th January 2021 from, DYI Window Regulator Runner Repair with photos

After some more digging on the internet, I found an eBay supplier in the US that makes new rollers out of alloy. They are a bit more pricey than Rovernaut's system though! Accessed from, LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 1 1994-1998 REAR WINDOW REGULATOR ROLLER REPAIR KIT URY1 X1 | eBay

I have no relationship to the seller.

    Kind regards

    Hello All,

I decided to order a set of replacement rollers for the rear window regulator. From the strength in the metal alloy components of the window regulation system the nylon rollers were always going to be a weak point. Plus to replace the window regulator system I would have had to pull it out anyway if I was to fit in a whole new regulator system. Now, I just have to wait for the parts to arrive from the USA. I will report on their effectiveness once they arrive and I fit them. I may be able to ditch the three long wedges of wood that the previous owner used to hold the window up!

Today, while I was waiting for a telephone call from a recruitment company - after getting all the resources ready for the call - I wanted something to do to reduce the wait. I went out to the Discovery D1 and changed the driver's side head light and indicator. Of the different makes and models of vehicles I have worked on before I have never been able complete each task without needing any tools. I also did not have to remove the whole front panel to access the headlights.

I think the designers of the Discovery 1's headlights and front indicators should be praised for their efficient designs. They should pay the designers who made VY Holdens a visit; no doubt other manufacturer's as well. The lesson would be "how to design a very user-friendly method of front indicator and headlight fitment and replacement.

I was surprised when I took the headlight out. The surprise was that the headlight sloshed and was quite heavy. I tipped out about a litre of water from it. No wonder the headlight did not work! The headlight had a stone chip when I bought the car and the indicator had a spider-web of stress cracks over it. The bulb fitting in the indicator was also highly corroded. I just have to fit the battery to see if I can tick off the "lights working on all corners" on the "Things to Do" list.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Yes! easy to remove/install, but can be problematic when the plastic cups clips break. If one breaks, you may see a slight shimmying of that headlight over corrugations .. not annoying but look hard enough and you can see it.
If you either don't notice the one broken one, or forget to replace it, then another will break sooner rather than later, and then you will most certainly see the shimmying headlight spread on rough roads.
When the third one breaks over rough roads, expect it to fall off break the wires that tried in vein to tether it to the vehicle, but were too slender to be effective ... etc, etc.

Of course the above is all tongue in cheek, but do check the condition of the socket clips, they do break easily. Very cheap to replace tho.

Also, if you didn't already know .. same setup in D2(not D2a tho) .. and lights fully interchangeable.

About a month ago I was up in the country on a drive, and a stupid bird flew up and out, then flicked back into my path(at 95k/h), hit headlight, many feathers ruffled down the RHS of the car.
Really didn't expect any damage, other than a few feathers and some bird juice. But headlight was smashed to bits!

I currently have a D2 project car, I will get up and running soon, but needed non smashed headlight, so temporarily scrounged one off the D2. Had to scrounge both tho, as the only difference between D2 and D1 are that the D1 is all chrome inside the lens, the D2 have a blacked out rim area .. looked weird having one of each, and only becasue the lights are so easy to remove I changed both. Had it been some stupidly complex system where the front bumper .. all the way back to the rear tailshaft had to be removed to get the lights out, I'd have left the good one alone.

BTW, the blacked out D2 ones look a bit nicer too. Zero perceptible difference(if there is any) in performance tho.

    Except the indicators, of course.

What's the difference between 2 and 2A, apart from the little 'bubble' on the bottom?
