300 TDI cranks but no fuel to injectors.

    Hi Brains Trust,

Discovery 1 97' cranks but will not start. Was idling in the driveway then there was a thunk and it stalled. 12v to fuel cut-off solenoid when ignition set to ON, 8.4V when cranking (mechanic suggested this was normal). Solenoid clicks when wire touched to spade terminal when ignition set to ON. New fuel filter installed thinking it was bad fuel. Tank and sedimenter drained, system bled using lift pump and starter. Plenty of fuel returning to tank from return line. Solenoid removed and inspected visually confirmed plunger functioning. Solenoid re-installed without plunger so solenoid cannot shut the fuel off. Have cracked the injectors to confirm no fuel getting to injectors. Assumed timing belt ok because lift pump operated when cranking. I removed the aircon belt tensioner and confirmed pump does turn when cranked by hand. Have been cranking enough to make the starter motor smoke in the hope that the injector pipes needed more bleeding. I'm left with injection pump issue. Please tell me I've missed something.
A Member on another forum suggested that the teeth on the sprocket could be worn causing the timing belt to slip when cranking. I havent yet confirmed this.

Not wanting to replace the injection pump if I dont have to so keen to hear your thoughts.

Have you tried a direct hotwire from the battery to the fuel solenoid. ?

I havent but the piston or plunger (whatever it is called) has been removed. Solenoid just plugs the solenoid hole in the back of the injection pump but cannot impede fuel in any way. Will have to stall the car to stop the engine (if I can get it started).

While I've never seen it on a landie, if you have one of the rubber tipped plungers if the rubber comes off of the fuel cut plunger and sticks in the hole you dont get fuel.

If the pump is set on the 0 fuel position you wont get it to put any fuel into the injectors this can occur for 2 reasons.

    1. the throttle side is mis adjusted and allowing a "too low idle" setting or
    2. the boost compensator pin is over travelled doing the same thing.
