Location of ABS Relay 300TDI Discovery 1

    Hello All,

Can anyone let me know where to find the ABS relay on a 1996 Discovery 1 fitted with a 300tdi? Does this relay have a number of pins and if so which one would you hook up a power wire to?

I tracked down a couple of Land Rover forums in the UK that mentioned running a wire to relay turn the ABS on so it can pump and bleed itself out and the brake callipers. Unfortunately, the articles do not identify where the relay is located and which pin to work with. For example, one of these forum replies is from the "BigLad" ...

If you can get power to the ABS pump relay, you can turn the pump on and pump out at each wheel in turn, starting from rear drivers side to front passengers side.

Get juice to the pump and just pump away at each wheel bleed nipple until clean fluid comes through..

I do this all the time on DII's, so on DI it's just a matter of finding a way to power up the pump.

Ensure you have enough juice in your battery and enough brake fluid to keep topping up the M/c.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Mine doesn't have ABS, but looking at RAVE(do you have RAVE?)

It's listed as "behind RHS of fascia", but I'm thinking this is for LHD vehicles, so for RHD cars, it could be behind/under the passengers glovebox.
That's what it looks like in RAVE ... not so much behind, but underneath the glovebox side of the dash, under a bolted up panel.

Alternate way to get power to the ABS pump, could be via the connector to it.
There is a two pin connector at the front of the ABS pump, between the airbox. It should have one bronw/red wire and a black wire. Brown and red wire is the power to the pump.

    Hello All,

Arthur thank you for the reply - much appreciated. I do not have RAVE, nor know what it is - other than a dance party ... knowledge gained from the TV.

After taking on board a couple of forum suggestions, texting a friend and incorporating some YouTube content, I attempted to get the brakes on the D1 functioning again this afternoon.

I filled the master cylinder reservoir right to its top. As per YouTube I went for a drive in my paddock. While driving along I pumped the brake pedal. Apparently this is the least advised option of bleeding the ABS. The other options involved: getting a tow to mechanic and getting them to fix the brakes, buying a scan tool, or borrowing a scan tool, or use with caution ... finding a paddock. A paddock I have!

Having done a couple of circuits and using the brake pedal like a treadle with my left foot while accelerating with the right foot, I glided to a stop. I then kept the engine running, hooked up my pressure bleeder to the reservoir and pressurised it. Then I held the brake pedal down with a piece of wood. Each brake nipple from passenger rear, driver's rear, FP and FD was bled.

I went for another drive in the paddock and ...

    the vehicle has brakes again!

I will check the brakes again tomorrow - just in case today's result was a fluke.

Next on the list is the spring in the driver's door latch and replace the rollers in the rear passenger window regulator. Closely followed by refitting the passenger's side external mirror.

    Kind regards
    Lionel
