    300 Tdi Head Gasket

    Hi All,
I am looking at a 300Tdi D1 for my son.
We had a look at it yesterday, and took it for a short drive of about 10 minutes, after this it was pumping coolant out of the expansion tank.
There is no oil in the coolant, and no water in the oil, but a constant stream of bubbles coming up through the expansion tank

Can this be anything other than the head gasket, or head?

It apparently had a head gasket replaced about 3 months ago, what may have gone wrong.

At the asking price, I'm still tempted, if we do the head, cam belt and radiator, fit a decent temp gauge and low coolant alarm,it should be a good base.

The young bloke is keen to get his hands dirty

Any thoughts on the above, should I walk away:-)

    Tony

    if your handy

if your handy with the spanners and the price is right go for it. Be aware the previous owner may have just changed the gasket. A question i would ask was the head checked for hardness and machined. Worst case i would be pricing a replacement head and factoring it into your negotiations. Baz

As Baz said, factor a new head into the price. Too many people replace the gasket and crack on. It may be that the head needed a light machining, it's gone soft or there is a crack between two of the cylinders either in the head (more likely) or in the block (less likely). Not much else comes to mind in this scenario.

May I be rude and ask what the price is? I haven't seen what I would consider a reasonably priced D1 300 Tdi in 18+ months. With all the people buying 4wds due to travel restrictions, the prices have gone through the roof. Parts can still be gotten at good prices at least.

Not a bad vehicle to start learning to spin spanners on.

    Good luck.

Mine has just started doing the same thing. I've done less than 1500kms in mine since I bought it. With older trucks that haven't been driven much in a while all the seals and gaskets go hard or wear out. It's been a process with mine. But with a 20 ton press for the bushes and a DTI for the fuel pump, I'm getting some good kit together.

I'm going to get my mechanic to send the head away for testing when I take it off. Just to be safe.

Will also check the block with a laser Level to see if it's level but I will take a gamble with the block if it looks ok.

Also one thing that can make the coolant bubble is a loose radiator hose. So make sure you check all the hoses for holes and clamps for tightness just in case.

I've been following your build, you've had your share of frustration, but you should have a good vehicle at the end of it.

Thanks Tony - yeah I do get a bit frustrated with the old girl. You think you're done and then bam, she hits you with another issue. Definitely tests the patience. I probably shouldnt post on the forum when I'm ****ed off 300 Tdi Head Gasket Good luck with the car. Hope it's a good one for your son.

when i got my 300TDi it wasnt too long before i had the same problem, took head off, it was marginal, so after ringing around locally and after hints from this forum i got a head and gasket from England (turners IIRC) and dont forget the head bolts. I got all this for around 1/2-2/3rds the price of locally bought and landed at my door in 4-5 days. All great also get an engine monitor which will save you money in the future (i got an engine watch dog)

If you are doing the head, replace the viscous fan coupling, hoses, thermostat and get the radiator rodded.
