    I hate donuts.

I go through donuts like nobody's business I *hate* them. Just to get that off my chest. I had been wondering about an unusual vibe then on Saturday I ended up retrieving my rear propshaft 100m back down the road. All part of the fun:-)

Now I've found an old post from young Angus. Seems like it is possible convert a d1 from donut to universal at rear diff.

Does anybody have any links or info about this please?

Are you using quality donuts or cheap ones? And are they installed the right way around?

What he said. Mine isn't wearing out at all because my car blew up I hate donuts., but prior to that I've only gone through 2 donuts in two separate cars in 150,000 combined kms. Buy OEM/genuine and they will last many long time.

If your car is lifted like a skyscraper (bigger than 3 inches) or you have ridonkulous sized tyres get a tom woods double cardon conversion. And convert the diff pinion flange from the pin type to the unijoint type. Job sorted.

Yes, I used about 5 donuts in 4 years. I was using quality parts with new centre bearings. No lift, but does have an upgraded intercooler. Purchased a new tailshaft with uni joints and used the flange setup from a front diff. Problem solved.

My old D1 had a 3" lift and only ever replaced one in almost 200k, carried a spare but never needed it.
Converted it to a uni shaft from an early D1 just in case.

My D1 lasted a bit over 100K klms.
Only had cracks in it .. not badly broken but replaced it with a cheapie spare .. Made vibration much worse, so ended up renewing all components(including pin).

Not sure how old brothers D2 donut was, but again had cracks and replaced all components as preventative work.

I just replaced all unis on the front shaft of the D2 barely lasted 50K klms, I think as low as 35K(bro can't remember exactly).

It'd be interesting to work out the stats as to why some folks get so low klms out of them, yet others get a lot more.
Also curious is manual or auto has any bearing on the life of the donuts too ... maybe auto is a bit more gentle on them or something weird like that.

Have had both. This one was advertised as the good one but a cheapo arrived. They look symmetrical to me- no?

Cool maybe I'll look at this option. Might be beyond my level though. Would a decent mechanic be able to do it if I got the tailshaft and flange?

For a 4WD that was so far ahead of the other brands when introduced this "Doughnut" that connects the rear driveshaft to the diff seems to me to be a bit "Agricultural".
