    Transmission death rattle

    Greetings
My 97 300TDI started making whining growly noises from somewhere underneath a few weeks ago, only noticeable around 80 kmh .
The noise has been slowly getting worse, now it sounds like the transmission is full of rocks when it deccelerates and make loud ticking sounds when coming to a stop. There is a thumping when its moving in reverse, actually feels like
a tooth is missing off a gear.
I changed the oil in the transfer case, oil didn't look to bad and no metal. Also changed the rear uni and donut as both were a bit sad.
Front drive shaft feels fine, lots of grease and not a lot of play.
I've a nasty feeling its the transfer case but I'd like a second third and fourth opinion.
    Cheers

    Found it

the intermediate gear has shattered, bits of teeth everywhere although the two gears it meshes to look fine.
Next question, is it worthwhile overhauling the box or using it as a boat anchor?
    Cheers

Do yourself or someone else? And could you change the box out yourself? And… how long do you want to be off the road?
My old Series 3 I’d do myself and faff around for ages finding other things wrong and ordering parts I didn’t know I’d need. I’m thinking it’d be doable but just make sure you know why it shattered if possible. Others may have done one and know more than me! And what else should be done whilst you’re in there!
