1998 Diesel Discovery 1 Timing Belt length of service

my Disco 300TDi is coming up to 80,000k on the this timing belt, i was under the impression that this was when it was time to change the belt
but i rang a workshop to get a quote and they say i should be able to get 100,000-150,000k out of them.
what is the correct distance please

You also need to know how OLD the belt is as they also deteriorate over time.

I vaguely remember it originally being 120K but was then reduced to 70K or 7 years.

There was a modification done early on as the belt wandered and wore away. Not sure how you determine whether the mod was done but I would have thought most were done if they're still running !
The kit replaced the timing chest, injector pump bracket & pulleys.
Front timing cover 300TDi, why change it?

I did my first belt change very soon after getting the D1. In it's first 2 years I averaged 35K klms/yr, so planned to do the change in about 2-3 years.
The second change came at just a tad more than 60K klms, and not due to years or klms, but more so because front crank seal leaking .. which just got worse and worse.
Lockdowns meant not a lot of travel for the best part of 2 years, so 2-3years became closer to 6 years in the end.

As the belt needs to come off anyhow to do the front seal, got the kit to change it earlier than I planned too(the belt kits are relatively cheap).
Alternative would have been to just replace the crank seal and reuse the 60K klm belt again, then go through the tedious process of doing it all again in 30K klms(maybe 6-12 months in non lockdown conditions).

The other thing I noticed was zero rubbery residue on the timing covers .. nor on the engine side of the timing case this time around ... where on the first change(which was dry, no oil) was some rubbery dust all over(came off easily enough tho).

The 60K klm belt compared to the new one was 'as new', other than a lot of oil on it due to the leaking front main .. very slightly harder rubber compared directly to the new one too, and this could have been to the oil contamination plus heat cycling too.
If there was any stretch on the old belt, it wasn't obvious.

My next scheduled belt change is going to be at 100K klms, which lines up to 520K klms on the D1s odo .. I may do it at the 500K mark, or begin to plan it for then, and do it when there is time between 500 and 520K.

The manual says many things (snip from the rave below)

80K Km / 5 years is my advice, remember 80K Km of first gear low range is a lot more rotations of the belt than 80K Km of highway 5th gear cruising.

I have seen easy driven belts make it to past 180K Km but then I've also seen belts not make the 80K Km mark.

ah ha that clears the fog a bit, most of my stuff is around town and out to the scenic rim, i dont rev it much over 2000rpm
i am thinking of going to 100k but not much further if i can help it, approx $900 to get it changed is
a bit out of my price range at the moment i had to pay $2k to get the aircon fixed

All timing belts should still look new when it's time to replace, if they don't and haven't broken before you replace.... You are very lucky!!
