    thermo fan remove

Really struggling with removing the thermo fan on 1998 3.9 V8. Belts tightened as much as possible. Can't find a 36mm open spanner here in Perth. well after 'google' search anyway. Adjustable one does not fit in the gap.
Any one in Perth have the tool I could borrow?, you will be rewarded.
Any one know where I can buy a 36mm open ender? I might have to try and make one if not.
    Thanks in advance.

36mm viscous fan spanners are fairly common. Places like Repco should stock them if them.

Many thanks for that, when I searched "viscous fan spanner" it came up with Repco.
I did find one (36mm ring/open end) on a tractor tool place, $189.00. wow. The Repco one is $40.00.
    You saved me a lot.
Now, back to trying to undo it.

    Toledo 36mm long handled.

$43 at Supercheap. In stock at the Belmont store.

Same tool at Repco (Belmont again) in stock too, but $45.

When you 'google search' you don't really search what you need, you're searching for who paid highest price to display on your device.

Easier searching sometimes for generic stuff is to go to the websites of the popular/convenient places that accommodate your needs(ie. local, and in stock), and search in their domain.

so, go to repco or supercheap ... autobarn, etc .... whatever stores near you, that sell this kind of stuff, and search in their search box.

I brought my spanner at Repco a fair while back. Not sure what size the Td5 uses, but it was cheaper than anything on the Internet at Repco. Got a feeling it may have been listed as a "Ford viscous hub" spanner or similar on their site.

    Thanks Arthur,
just went to Morley Repco and got one. All good.

Is it a Land Rover thing? went to commence work and pulled the bonnet release lever, which came out in my hand?
cable snapped. 2 days later, finally got bonnet open. Trying to get to the water pump, another day gone just to get the tool to remove fan.

Remember the old days, changing a water pump on a Holden, one bolt, loosen Alternator, take belt off, 3 bolts, remove pump.
This is my third day in, hoping to get pump off by end of today.
Then of course, replace bonnet cable.....remove grill etc. etc.
    One step forward, two back.

    All fun, I guess.

To remove the fan, just get the spanner and whack it with a hammer, and it should break loose. ( takes about 3-5 whacks sometimes)Unless it of course was like my car where a genius mechanic had loctited the fan thread. 8 hours, making of tool to hold pulley, heat, and finally it came undone. JEEEEZ.
Otherwise if you do not want to buy the tool, you can usually jam a big screwdriver across two of the bolts on the back side of the pulley to hold it while you whack the spanner.
BTW lefty loosy.( I am now not sure whether that is the same on D1 and D2 and V8, vs diesel so check )

    LOL! on the bonnet cable.
Happened to me on the TD5 D2 too.
I have a small solar setup in the shed, and went to connect the clamps to the battery in the d2 to keep them fresh while car sat for a short time .. cable came out a good 1/2 meter... arrgghh!

On my V8 D2, I had noisy power steer pump. Pulled the one out of the spare, relatively easy job. I have a 34/32mm spanner that does both the V8 fan and the Tdi(32mm) fan. Came off easy peasy off the spares v8.
No such luck on the project V8 tho. The not so sturdily built spanner(which did a good job on the spares V8 and Tdi .. no worries) .. started to bend up working on the project V8 fan. I locked the fan using various bits I could .. but the thing was same as Philips .. someone had locktighted it on. To remove the pwr steer pump tho .. fan had to come off. So I hacked the fan and removed the water pump instead.
I then had the water pump and hacked fan in the vice, and ground the viscous to get a proper spanner on the nut, and clamp the water pump impeller, and it spun the impeller rather than release the viscous nut!
Anyway ... new water pump(never hurts) and viscous and fan unit from the spare ... and still a noisy stupid power steering pump!
Now that was a wasted couple of days. (got the old pwr str pump rebuilt and did it all again later )

Thanks guys, I'm not sure if your making me feel better or not??
I'm starting to miss the old Holden, Ha Ha.

No luck getting it off last night, but it was beer o'clock. I'm sure I can get to all the water pump bolts and will try that if no luck.
Jamming up the belts and pulleys with wood wedges and hitting spanner with 5lbs hammer, something was still slipping.
Easier getting it in the vice after.

It's a new day today, Er, fourth day doing water pump. will let you know.

    Well, all done.
cracked the nut off by jamming pully bolts with huge square shaft screw driver. Gave the pec's a bit of a workout.
Thread was full of crumbling crap, so seems another case of locktight over use.
    The rest was plain sailing.
Now I've got into the pump, can see a leak, back of power steering pump, so unbolted that and it appears to be the hose from reservoir.
Also drivers tappet cover leaking. May as well sort those out too.
    More fun ahead.
Four days to change a water pump. But it felt sooo.. good when that nut turned.

Thanks again for all the help.

    Ron.
