The 2.7T limit would be reached as soon as I have another one and a half humans in there, full tank of fuel and a fridge, food and luggage. Surely I can do something to go over that amount and do it safely

Was that with you in the car(on a weighbridge)?

Mine used to weigh in at 2250-2300(fuel dependent) with me in it, on the work weighbridge.
I think I had 1150 on the front axle with just dual batteries(both up front) and bullbar.

Little by little those accessories all add up.

Make that 3 for low range in a 300tdi d1. I'm always in low in my r380 d1. 1st and 2nd high are too high imo. Did the r380 defenders have the same ratios?

Need to put the D1 on a diet.

Sounds like your D1 needs to lose some weight if it is going to go camping with the lot.

If I was camping next to water full of Crocs then a RTT would be my choice but apart from that I am not drawn to them. I like to set up camp and do short trips around the camp, leaving the camp set up while checking out the vicinity.

If you keep tour camping needs down to a minimum and cull the heavy accessories you should be ok with a RTT. There is not much that can be done if you exceed the GVM. I don’t know of anyone offering GVM upgrade kits. In order to do a GVM upgrade you are going to have to engage a vehicle engineer to get it done legally. I doubt it is worth, keep your weight down place all your water, fuel and heavy stuff down low on the car.

Keep it light and enjoy your D1.

Defenders have the same gearbox ratios, but a lower high range, 1.4:1 V 1.2:1 in the Disco. This is due to the larger tyres and higher GVM on the Defender.
The V8s have a higher 5th gear than the 300 Tdi.

I hate the high range low gears in the Disco, I have slightly larger tyres on mine at 245/75/16 but I didn't think that would make a huge difference. I tell you what though I'd love to have those high gears just a little lower sometimes. I think I remember looking into doing that a while ago and decided it wasn't worth it but that's something I wouldn't mind.

Ashcroft make a 1.3:1 if you want to split the difference.

Hmm I don't fully understand the ratios yet but that sounds like a good idea to me.
