Safari Snorkel to fit or not?

Hi all, I have a really nice well kept 1995 V8 auto D1 that I picked up earlier this year. Thanks to this site I have made the changes to the ignition system as recommended plus changed/cleaned other potential issues. Now that I have the preventative repairs out of the way I was am in two minds as to whether fit a snorkel for maybe 🤞 a bit better performance ( knowing that it’s not a race car) but more for any potential gain in economy as my son and I are planning a trip to the corner country of NSW next year, the reason I’m asking is the inlet trumpet on the air cleaner housing seems small for trying to feed 3.9l. I don’t know how much cfm the V8 needs but it’s a lot smaller inlet than my Perentie which is the same capacity .
I don’t want to ruin the classic look of the D1 if their is no real gain. Thanks Paul.

You won't get any performance gain by fitting a snorkel(IMO).
I have a 300 tdi, and I feel like I've lost a small amount after fitting snorkel. It's not much, as the tdi already doesn't have a lot of power/torque to lose anyhow.
But definitely fuel economy has decreased ever so slightly by comparison.
Before snorkel I used to get 10 - 10.5 l/100 after it definitely harder to get 10 consistently, and most drives it's about the 9.7l/100 range.

Of course fuel consumption isn't an accurate metric to use as a psuedo dyno ... but these figures are over many thousands of klms, not just per tank.

Would I still fit a snorkel again, knowing 'what I know'? Yep! ... driving on dusty/gravel roads keeps the air filter so much cleaner.
With the recent couple of years of lockdowns, haven't had the chance to do much driving, and it seems such a waste to change a perfectly clean filter as it stays so much cleaner in all weather conditions now.
    Arthur.

    LOL! yeah a bit confusing.
Fuel usage has increased a bit .. or the efficiency of its fuel usage has decreased

If you used to get 10-10.5l/100km and now get 9.7, your economy has improved.

Regardless of the fuel consumption a snorkle will feed cleaner and cooler air to your engine as well as increasing your wading depth, A Much better option to the stock system that sucks hot dusty air from under the wheel arch.
    Fit the snorkle

^^^What Trout said. I threw a snorkel on my D1 300 for the above reasons.

Umm, going from 10~10.5 before to 9.7 after is BETTER economy, so the snorkel improved it.

But improved economy is not a rterason for fittings, the other reasons given (dust; cool air; water depth) are.

You should get rid of the trumpet especially if you are in the habit of plowing through a water filled causeway….’to clean the under dust’. Guess where the water ends up.
You can gain a bit of power by fitting a set of extractors to the V8. I’ve recently done it to my 2002 Disco and there is more power and marginally better economy. Cheers. See you at one of the corners. 👍🏻🙏🦘

Haha ... Geez I'm an idiot.
Just read that part again, and I typed it up wrong.

    should be km/lt, not lt/100km

I usually use km/lt for fuel consumption. No idea why I chose lt/100km this time around, I think because many here seem to prefer it.
    I prefer km/lt.

    sorry for confusion.
