So you mean item 4 in this pic?
Camshaft.JPG
Due to oil and coolant leaks I am giving the D1 3.9 a top end replacement of the following, head gaskets, camshaft and lifters, timing chains, water pump etc.
I did not recall removing a camshaft location plate prior to removal of the camshaft.
Looked around the parts containers and I have now concluded that one was not fitted.
Question. Will I source and fit a camshaft location plate or just reassemble without as original.
Apart from the weeping coolant and oil leaks from the timing cover and heads the engine has run sweet as for 339000klm.
Any advice will be appreciated

Just for the record the 3.9 fitted with distributor did not have a camshaft location plate.
Non distributor engines had one fitted.
I assume the distributor drive gears maintained the position of the camshaft

No, not exactly, this is my engine, I have rebuild a few 3.9 with distributors. Mine is a late 1998 3.9 disco 1, with distributor, and am in the process of full engine rebuild, it has a full circular plate to hold camshaft. earlier ones had the half plate as has been shown.
even earlier ones did not have this plate, pre- 1994, mainly because the lobes on cam were cut at an angle to rotate lifters. This action pulled the cam in wards.
Nothing to do with distributor.
Camshaft endfloat was an issue in some engines and it caused a knock. LR released a 'button' type bolt that was fitted and filed down to get the right clearance between the camshaft and the timing cover. The plate (if fitted) wasn't used IIRC.
