    Not an issue I’ve had, but I know that if oil can’t get out of the turbo via the drain then it will build up pressure and cause the oil to bypass the turbo seals and into the inlet/exhaust.
    If the breather was blocked then it might have had enough crankcase pressure to do something similar. Sort of fits with the symptoms you’ve had.

    Fingers crossed eh.

    I did replace the drain hose when I did the turbo because I kinked it on removal, and to make sure it wasn’t the problem the first time.

    It's a long time since I had my 300Tdi, but I seem to recall there is a fibre or foam type filter inside the rocker cover to eliminate most of the oil going with crankcase fumes to the pre-turbo inlet hose.

    It can let oil through the engine, but is an easy thing to check. Just make sure it's in-place and sound. Something to eliminate anyway.

    Just the cyclone filter AFAIK - nothing else under my rocker cover, and nothing in the workshop manual.

    Mike from Brittanica restorations has mentioned in one video that it might be a good idea to install a deflector to stop oil being flung into the separator, but I think I’ll just focus on getting it back up to standard. I ‘spose the other longer term solution would be a provent- seemed to be all the rage on here a few years ago…

    Well the new cyclone breather is in. Might be my imagination but it sounds and feels just slightly better than before. Sounded not great when I ran it the next day after the smoke, but before the new breather - missing occasionally and just a bit louder than usual. Maybe it was just clearing out whatever oil remained where it shouldn’t?

    There wasn’t any oil to speak of in the Intercooler, so I don’t know how the oil was being burnt. Anyway I won’t let myself think it’s fixed until I do a few freeway trips but for now it’s running well.

    Took a while to get to because I changed the Welch plug behind the water pump housing at the same time - had a pin-hole leak that was sending a perfect stream into the fan, spreading coolant everywhere. And had to helicoil the housing for the belt tensioner whilst I was at it…

    I’m certainly advancing my spanner skills with this car!
