300tdi clouds of smoke on overrun

Bit of a long one, hope someone has some ideas!

Hi all, seeking diagnostic help. A few months ago I was driving on the freeway, and just after I crested a hill I saw in the mirror a cloud of oil-smelling smoke. Pulled over at the bottom of the hill and there was a bit of oil under the bonnet on top of the rocker cover- perhaps from the filler cap? Anyway I was miles from anywhere and had it idling for a while and seemed to be running fine aside from the smoke. Decided to drive to the next town but after a few minutes it cleared up so I drove home without incident.
A few weeks later, same symptoms but then quickly developed to just being smokey all the time and way down on power. Turbo was seized (and then when I freed it up it had heaps of play). So I replaced the turbo with genuine garret (and new feed+drain hoses) and it’s been great until today.

Now today same symptoms - smoke on overrun on the freeway, made an exit and was very Smokey on overrun and at idle, but after a few minutes of driving cleared up and is now ‘fine’ again.
Oil on the rocker cover again. Checked the new turbo and there is a very small amount of play (I think about the same as before install, nothing like the old one).
Intake/Intercooler hoses have a bit of oil residue but nothing like when the last turbo went.
Took the cyclone cleaner off and flushed it with kerosene- seems clear but when blowing into any of the three openings it takes a lot of effort to get not much airflow out the other two- is that right?
Head is a new unit from turner installed recently. Engine has 370,000km on it and breathes a bit but not too bad.

I’m out of ideas. Anything I should check before handing it over to the professionals?

    Thanks in advance…

Valve stem seals in my opinion.

Have you checked the oil level?

Oil level was down around the minimum mark.

Blow by with the filler cap off is present, but based on YouTube videos not shocking.

Valve stem seals would make some sense, but why only intermittent?

I’m going to replace the breather as a first easy step- it has been suggested that it should be easier to blow through, and I’ve found reference to one having caused a very similar problem.

Keep the ideas coming, will report back…

Valve stem seals doesn't make sense with the recent new head.
A blocked breather will cause oil to be pushed up past the rings.

You could have a high level of previously accumulated oil in the intercooler, that is gradually making is way through the system.. Long shot, but could be.

I’ve run a couple of cans of SCA brake cleaner through the intercooler with reasonable success. It’s not perfect but saves removing it. Just need to take off both hoses and after done let it dry out over night. If you had a air degreasing gun you could probably use other degreasing liquids.

That's more of a petrol engine thing anyway. Oil past the stem seals on overrun or at idle is usually caused by high vacuum when the throttle is closed. Diesels don't do that which is why they need a vacuum pump.

When I replaced the turbo recently I cleaned out the intercooler. So if it’s full of oil(will have a chance to look at the car again on the weekend) something is putting it there too quickly.

Picked up the new breather today and by comparison the old one is definitely blocked, so fingers crossed this is the problem.

Thanks all for the replies, will report back when it’s all buttoned up and I’ve had a chance to take it on a run. In other exciting news I’ve found a minor coolant leak that has been bugging me for a while (mostly because it got less minor!) so I should be able to sort that out too.
