I want to put a apple carplay headunit into the car, I have found a lot of units that have reportedly fit the D2 and I am curious if both are the same.

Nanocom, D2 TD5 only.
I've never tried to fit one into the other, but from removing and refitting both D1 and D2 uncountable times ... they look at the least 99.99999% the same.
I did fit the good drink tray out my spares D2 into my D1's centre facia ..
The one difference is the colour tho. looking at each individually, they look the same, but they are different.
Oh and as for radio units ... just a standard single din unit fits easily into either .. as they would in any other single din slot in any car.
I've never seen a 1.5 DIN slot in a D1(doesnt' mean they don't exist, just I've never seen one!) ... but 1.5DIN slots do exist in the D2 world. My project D2 has this type of upgrade entertainment unit .. and speakers etc ..
These centre fascia units would have to be different, as the standard single DIN slot type fascia will definitely not fit a 1.5DIN type head unit.

yeah, I got a harmon cardon type radio/tape/CD changer controller head unit, it's 1.5DIN, where it doesn't have the small finisher trim at the bottom edge of the radio fasica. On this head unit, that area where the finisher trim is, has the buttons.

Ok so look for headunits that fit the single din setups. Would you think this unit would work?

I don’t know if it works, but it looks like you could make it work. The screen looks like it can be adjusted to fit within the radio slot, but could be spaced if it doesn’t if the mounts dont already space it out enough already - which I suspect they do. It looks like the screen mounts already have enough range to space it up to suit rather than be centered as pictured. That said, I genuinely don’t know if it fits.

I'd say it'll work for sure, in that thee would be some way to make it work. But would it be ideal.
And with that specific unit, my major concern would be the subsequent use of the heater controls.
Estimating the size of the unit and the proximity of the heater controls in the D1 to the bottom edge of a DIN unit, for sure the dials will get obscured by the bottom edge of the display screen .. unless the display screen has some adjustment upwards and/or outwards.
Looking at the images in the link, it's obvious that the screen can be mounted in an adjustable manner, vertically, but the question is ... are their built in set points correctly aligned with the D1's spacing requirements.
To be honest, to me it looks OK, that the screen can be set higher than shown in the main images, and not interfere with the heater dials ... and I would take the chance on it.

Yes they are the same and have seen a couple modified to house a double din head unit.

Like Slunnie said, if the display unit can be spaced out from the main body unit, it can fit.
On the D1/D2 dash, the radio unit is recessed into the fascia, about 10mm at the top and tapering to about 30mm at the lower side, so it's angled.
Look at the dimensions of the android unit, it shows a 20mm spacing of the display relative to the main body .. so for sure it's not enough in a std fitment.
So the display will need to spaced out more(than their hardware will allow) for the sake of the bottom edge, OR, the main body will need to protrude out of the fascia by an appropriate amount for the screen to not clash with the fascia at the lower edge.
