wrecking notice/heads up: 98 D1 TD5 getting stripped in Melb

Yep! .. you didn't read it wrong ... there is currently a 98 Discovery 1 TD5(TDi base) up at the Cambellfield pick-a-part getting wrecked.
I just got a couple of bits off the engine.

And no I haven't been drinking or indulging in mind bending substances.

Someone has gone to the effort to convert a Tdi D1 with a TD5. It's manual, and there is no gearbox
Motor is half in(barely), I did see fabricated engine mounts, but the motor rocks easily(maybe not connected) .. so it should be easy to hoist out the TD5 is someone needed.

Other points of interest in this:
The modder has also fitted D2 rear seats into it, so should make an easy way to convert a D1 rear seat into a D2 type rear seat setup. Front seats I couldn't really make sense of.
They have D2 armrests, but the base has a height adjustment lever, and it sits on a D2 rail.
I've never seen any D2 with manual height adjustable front seat .. (but then again I don't get out much either! )

seats in rather good condition if any D1(or D2) inclined local wanted to tart up their vehicle. I didn't inspect with fine toothed comb, but they looked very usable. Medium/dark grey leather.
Major issue is getting into the interior. Other than the drivers door, they don't open. I can see the latch mechanisms moving and 'opening' but I couldn't open the other 3.
Some other interior parts looked pretty good condition too if folks need this stuff. centre fascia is smashed to bits tho.

Axles had both diffs, but no hubs/brakes or axles. Bushes and arms all there, sway bars and springs and stuff too.

Anyhow, hope this helps some D1 owners in need of some cheap bits and stuff.
    Arthur.

I was actually up there looking for french car parts .. but I always wander over to the area where they "may" have the odd LR sitting.

I remember seeing the TD5(bonnet up) and of course rushing over. I need the exhaust. Then stroll down the side of the car .. but .. hangon .. D1? ????????
    WT.... stuff!
back to the open bonnet and mind racing to is it an MPI? .. didn't think there were MPIs in Aus .. moved some bits out the way .. yeah , for sure it's a TD5 .. huh? D1? huh? Wot Tha ...

Then I thought ... oh, maybe some landy nut had a TD5 too, and just chucked it into the engine bay to rid themselves of LR junk. But then you can see mounts/mounted ... Oh .. ok, someone tried to shoehorn the TD5 into a D1 then .. aha...

D2 rad and condenser and fan for it(not twin AC fans ) .. etc. But zero obvious cuts/shuts or other body mods to the front. For sure it'd have needed something done for the much taller D2 rad to fit under the bonnet, but I didn't inspect.

I seem to remember the late Ray Alford up in Romsey built a D1 with a TD5 motor years ago, he even modified the front guards to fit D2 indicators.

I've certainly seen TD5s in RRCs. Never in a D1. Still, I guess it could be done for the same reason, to replace the V8. Personally i wouldn't bother replacing a 300TDi with one.

There is a D1 TD5 running around in Tassie. If I recall correctly it started life as a TDI. It's been a while since I heard the story so my memory is hazy, I think the original engine blew up and they happened to have a spare TD5 to hand. I didn't have too close a look at how it had been done, I was there to see the 101!

    Cheers,
    Martin

Course, you don't need to spend a cent on a LR V8. 🎩
