Hi All, The latest quirk our 300tdi D1 has produced is a clunky sound, probably from the front end, sometimes when parking, going over a gutter, or around a roundabout. Only notice it at low speeds, at freeway speed it’s fine, doesn’t wander or shake or anything. I had the front end checked by the mechanic who does roadworthies for me, and he couldn’t find anything. It can’t be felt through the steering, but it seems to be related to a shift of weight. I spent some time yesterday checking bolts around the steering box, but didn’t find anything, and it is still doing it. Any ideas on what to check next would be appreciated.
Thanks, Woolly.
I’ll have a guess. Engine mounts?

Thanks for those responses. Looks like another day laying under the Disco. I don’t begrudge it though, it’s taken me to some amazing places.
Cheers,
Woolly.

Another happy hour on my back peering at the nether regions of the Disco, and all the suggested bits checked out okay. I really appreciated the suggestions though because while checking them I think I have found the culprit. I noticed a bit of paint rubbed off the firewall where the sound deadening cover on the top of the intake manifold was touching it. Removed the sound deadening to give a bit of clearance, took it for a short drive and no noise. As the noise was intermittent, I am not celebrating unreservedly, but my hopes are high.
Once again, thank you for the suggestions.
Cheers,
Woolly.

I did have a quick look at the gearbox mounts which appeared ok. The gearbox was reco-ed by an indie workshop during the Covid shut down and I doubt they would have put them back if they were suspect, especially as they could have billed me for new ones. However, they might not have put them back in the same position in the slotted holes, which may have caused the lack of clearance between the motor and the firewall. Great! Another excuse to spend time on my back on the garage floor!
Cheers,
Woolly.
