    My many discovery 1 questions

First up - brakes. I am assuming it’s the brake master but my 98 v8 auto (non abs) after maybe an hour of driving the brake pedal goes soft. If I step on it very slowly it sinks to the floor (it slows down but hardly) and if i mash the brakes or give it a panicked hit it seems to hold pressure. (If I lift and gently push again it’ll go soft) only difference being if I’m driving on a highway and not having to brake it comes good. (But will do it again once I’m in stop start traffic)

So basically when I’m using the brakes more (like going home in the afternoon and being stuck in traffic) the brakes will go soft but will feel better if I give it a quick step. Soft step equals pedal sinking to floor.

When I’m not using brakes much like in the morning or on the highway it feels fine and stops fine.

I’m suspecting it’s the master. I did read a thread on here long ago that seemed to point to the prop valve but I think that was a case of it always being soft and not really feeling like they will stop…

But just incase and just before I order this master tonight - is there anything else I should check?

Wellllll I only got it off the old owner recently. I think I remember him saying he got it serviced just over 12 months ago. But it may actually be older than that so I’m just gonna do a master and flush it anyhow to rule that out too.

Servicing? So many people overlook brake fluid, me included. Flush it. See what happens.

I have replaced the proportioning valve on mine and, as you say, it's pretty constant. Unless you have a slow leak there, but if so you see it leaking and your level will go down. Most likely the master. Good luck.

As others have said, brake fluid has a use by date, and very rarely changed at a regular service.

Made a fair difference to mine, I was slack and changed it last about 4 years ago.

On another topic for me to tackle after brakes - what tyre size can I get away with without flares? 265? Or can I squeeze 285? I just want to run the oem freestyle wheels. Also will a 2 inch lift and camel cut clear it? I’ve seen people go for 4 inch lift. What would I need to do for that? Cranked arms and double cardan shaft? Do I just use a d2 v8 shaft or?

265s on mine, std offset. Got pinged in Vic for no flares. While ago though.

Does it stick out past the guards? I may as well go 285s and get flares 😂

Yeah, enough for the HP to pull it over. So, yeah, why not? But don't quote me
