    Turbo Whine

    300 Tdi

I am getting a high pitch whine that rises and lowers with engine revs.

I have eliminated all the ancillary pulleys be removing both fan belts and whine is still there.

I reckon it is probably the turbo bearings. If this being the case, is it a stop driving immediately, or a look at later job?

If the turbo lets go does this suck shrapnel into the engine and destroy it?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

And while your turbo bearing are going they are putting metal into your engine oil...

Change it NOW and change the oil.

You'll need a bloody big pair of circlip pliers.... The red ones...., it's a bugger to get out if it's been in there a while, which it no doubt has.

The turbo **** itself last night coming home from work. For a period of about 1 Km I lost power and the wine went away.

I thought it might have seized but power returned and the wine came back. Got home and lifted the bonnet. Dripping oil.

In daylight today I got to see a massive amount of smoke out the exhaust.

Got onto eBay and found Chinese ones for around $400. I then saw the cartridge for around $200.

I have never done this before, but I had an old buggered one still on the manifold in the shed so I thought I would have a crack.

Not that hard to pull apart. So I came in to order one and bugger me, there is your post suggesting I do just that.

And Tins, yes I do have a big pair of circlip pliers.
