    Head gasket???

    Hi All,
Hope you all having a good Aus day weekend.

    97 D1 300Tdi manual.

The young blokes Disco appears to have done another head gasket.

They drove it up from Geelong to NE Vic last night, stopped in Wangaratta for fuel, just out of Wang it got hot, 100 deg, and was pushing some coolant out of the expansion tank, but didn't set off the low coolant alarm.

    Towed it home.

This morning, the coolant was low. We pulled the thermostat and it seems to the working.

Ran the car without the thermostat, and without the bung in the thermostat housing or radiator to check we had coolant flow, which we have, after 30-40 seconds we got aerated coolant pumping out both bungs, which continued for a while after we shut it down.

The car has done about 10,000km since we did the head gasket, and has a block temp gauge on thermostat housing and a low coolant alarm.

It's not been over 95 deg since we did the head gasket, and after a new viscous hub it sits between 85 and 90.

I know the answer, but if someone can give me an alternative I would love to hear it.

    Tony

    Gee Dave,
I know I asked for an alternative answer, but I really wanted the "just the replace the generic $1 part available from Repco on Australia Day" answer.

I've been trying to keep the cracked head answer out of my head.

For reasons I completely don't understand, that made me laugh.

I think a fractured bore would equal right off.

First decision has been made, the car isn't going back to Geelong on Sunday!

Thanks for the offer of help, appreciated.

Wel the head is off looks to me like it's failed between cylinders 3 and 4, and the water gallery.
I think this is were it failed last time, I'll find the photos.

    History.
Car was bought cheap with a blown HG, we fixed that, head was checked and machined.
    New head bolts
    Cam belt replaced.
    Radiator rodded.

Not long after that, whilst deciding on a low coolant alarm, on a trip, it blew a heater hose and got very hot.
We towed if home, had the head checked over, machined refitted with the gasket upside down. This makes the biggest oil leak I've had the misfortune to have in my garage floor.
    Reused head bolts

New gasket (right way up, we will never make that mistake again) reused head bolts.

It's done 10,000ish km with a low coolant alarm and block temp on the thermostat housing.
It was running a bit cool in winter, a new thermostat fixed that.
It was getting upto 95ish on hot days with the AC swapping the fan viscous fixed that.

The temp alarm is set to 100.

    thats a pretty common failure.

make sure you check the deck for tolerance.

Just to close out this thread.

The machine shop suggested that the problem may be injectors, turns out they're leaking, crack pressures are all over the place and the spray patterns all horrible.

So after a long delay, head has been machined and hardness tested, new Elring head gasket, new bolts, new injectors, cooling system flushed and new coolant.

All back together, and ran sweetly for the trip back to Geelong.

    Hopefully that is that.

    Tony
