Is a Disco a good option

Hi all, need the intelligent thought's of you boys with regards to my options. Ive' been looking a few trucks as my new daily driver, weekend toy, tourer. The few options are a 97-00 Disco diesel, Toyota 80 petrol/diesel and Patrol 2.8 diesel.
    I need something reliable, economical, easliy/cheaply modified(suspension,tyresetc),
My budjet is around $15,000 or so, I have seen a few disco's that would suit but need to know if it is going to be $$$ for my needs, re servicing and cost of modifying.
from others as usual, they try to put me off the Disco with the usual stuff like oil leaks, not reliable etc etc.
    appreciate all your help....cheers

A series 1 Disco Tdi would be a good choice as far as not much to worry about electrickery wise
They benefit greatly from a 2in lift a decent set of tyres and a few bits and peices ,ie bull bar ,spotties ,uhf ,roof racks ,
and as long as it has a full service history and is in good nick Id say you couldnt go far wrong
And then youve got a decent tourer , weekend warrior ,everyday driver
And you should be able to get the vehicle and near all accesories you need for around $15,000 .

I agree. But you could probably find a pretty modded up tdi for quite a bit less leaving a bit of extra cash?

If you are a non mechanical type, go the Jap!

However, if you like a really capable vehicle and get into deep dodo and out again, buy a older Land Rover or Defender :-)

The Discovery is a version of Land Rover, rides well, quiet (unless a diesel ), and very refined Gentleman's Carriage.

Mine does NOT leak oil, loves fuel and is er.. different

for what your describing a D1 with a tdi would be a good option and a workable base line should be obtainable for the 8-9k mark but it'll have some ks on it.

Well, I picked up a series 1 '94 three door 200tdi for 6k about 12 months ago, only had circa 150,000k on the clock with a full service history, no offroad use and no rust. I was hesitant at the time because I was new to 4wd and had never owned a diesel either. At the time I got graeme coopers workshop to check it over and it came back with a A+ report card.

Anyway, 12 months later I am still really pleased. 'BIG TEV' has become part of the family.

Bottom line though, I would say that all the advice I took in buying one with a full service history, low ks, no rust and a look over by someone who knew what to look for has really paid off.

    hope this helps!

I think that the last of the Tdi300 (1998-99) are among the best vehicles that you can have, providing that you look for one with good records. But then again this is applicable for any vehicle.
Economy is in a complete different league than the Toyota 4.2 or Patrol 4.2. I believe that the Tdi300 is one of the most economical large 4WD in the market.
I do not believe that you have to be a mechanic or a person with some kind of ability in doing you own repairs. I bought my Disco 1998 in 2004 with 98000 km I have driven 75000 km trouble free. good preventative maintenance is required like any other vehicle or machine. Do not believe in such thing as a maintenance free vehicle or machine because there is not such thing.
Another plus for Land Rover is the amount of cheap parts available and good independent specialized mechanics in all the states.
If I sell my Disco is to get a Defender, there is no another alternative for me regarding capabilities and economy.
    Cheers

    My 2 cents,
If you decide to go disco, check the Alpine windows for rust. The earlier discos were known for this (fixed for the Disco 2 upgrade)
Mine had it, was out of warranty but LR paid for half the cost cos I was the 2nd owner & had full dealer history, so thankful to them
Aliminium body (so no rust) but steel roof, so take a close look around the window seals.
