In regards to the age of your battery there may be a marking branded into the top of it near the edge and it will be something like 22b7 which would make its production date 22/2/07 (a=Jan, b=Feb, c=Mar. etc). Not all batteries are marked like this but I'm near positive that most Exide batteries are.
Cheers,
Anthony.

I've done a bit of digging and it seems that the N50ZZ is the correct size for the S1 (although I've never seen one).
Thanks for the advice re fitting a N70. It seems that modifying the bracket and bending the a/c pipes may be the way to go. I must admit that (with my luck) I'm concerned about fracturing them.
I understand what you're saying about a/c fitters. It really doesn't matter what type of refrigeration system they work on the need to vac. it down, do the work and them refill with gas. This can be a lengthy process (in the case of my milk vats the fitters can be there for 4 or 5 hours fixing a simple leak...it's just the time that they are standing around that you pay for.) If you put you vehicle into a workshop they'll probably work 2 or 3 jobs at a time so they avoid standing around, however they may charge you for the total time the car's in the shop! So be aware!
