Newly Lifted Disco

hey mate. I made my own and so did Knotty. They are quite simple to make.

I used 5mm plate (only stuff I could get, 4 mm would be plenty)and cut it to a diameter of 100mm. Bore two holes in the plate at 70mm apart which is 35mm out from the centre of the disc ;) but that make sense :( and this will allow it to be bolted down to the coil plate on the diff housing.

I then cold bent some 8mm rod (around the fence post :( but it worked) and welded it to the base plate. The whole she-bang is 140mm high which allows full compression of the coil without topping out the dislocation cone. This also keeps the dislocation cone just inside the bottom of the coil at full stretch of a 26.5 inch procomp shock so they relocate properly. The pic of mine on the previous page is prety much full extension of the shock, believe it or not, I couldnt find a mound big enough in town to get the front up ;)

only problem is I cant weld, so I had a mate do that for me..but I did paint them myself :D

BTW, I reckon the procomp shocks on the back are fantastic...no I dont work for them or sell them ;)

I had it out on the tracks on the weekend for the first time with them on and I found the whole ride much smoother than with the EFS shocks on the back. The EFS shocks were a bit hard, these procomp ones have seriously reduced the kick from the back end over mid size bumps and gullies on the tracks.

the EFS shocks are still on the front, but when money allows, I am going to get a procomp set for the front :D

What shorty said! you could buy them from equip4x4 or rovacraft but they are so simple to make, wouldnt cost more than $100. Even better if you can get materials from work at the right price:D

the steel bits (some plate and rod) to make two dislocation cones cost me a measly $22...plus a $2 can of spray paint from SCA. Gotta be happy with that :D

Just wondering how the pro comps compare to Koni or Bilstein shocks?

not sure mate, I havent used them before :( but rate them much higher than EFS...thats just my experience and how I prefer my truck to be set up ;) the EFS set up was way too hard in the back end for me

How much weight do you carry in the back.I carry a fair bit of weight(Wieghed the other night and went 2400 i was very surprised)and would be worried about them being to soft.Ome to me aren't bad at all infact i would say excellent.I want more flex this is the only reason i would consider changing.Cheers Brett

Very impressive wheel travel guys. I don't think I'd go to dislocation cones etc. I'm skeptical about the amount of traction that is actually generated when there is nothing more than the weight of the diff acting on the wheel.

Anyways ..... how do you rate the Dobinson coils? Are they a nice, supple spring? I've had an OME kit on my Disco for some time now and while it has served me well I do believe that I can achieve better ride quality (bit too harsh) and wheel travel than what it gives me.

Pro-comp is located less than a km from my house so I may drop in to have a chat about shock options with them.

I use to run OME and they rip you off. It cost me 1200 dollars for a 2 1/2 lift kit which i later found that the ome shocks are only about 5mm longer than std shocks. I was expecting a little bit more travel than std with higer coils:mad: Anyway enough of me ranting about ome, I find the dobinson coils to give a fantastic ride, I even have the H/Duty in the rear. A mate has king springs and nitro shocks in his disco. OMG you need a kidney belt to ride in his:D My bro disco white runs procomps and dobinsons coils aswell he has towed trailers from sydney to bilo a couple of times and he cant fault them

Well I've just found today that a significant contributer to my crap ride is the fact that at least one of the shock absorbers is purely decorative!

I think I may as well bite the bullet and fit a set of Billies, after a rebuild they will have just about paid for themselves and I can do a bit of horse trading to get them for about the same price as pro-comps.. The budget doesn't extend to coils at present but the Dobinsons, King Springs and the custom springs from LRA are all on the cards.
