Body lift kits - The ins and outs?

    Hi all,

Not after a full on detailed description of what to do, but I'm thinking of doing a 2-inch lift on my Disco. I've done this before on other cars and have found a few dramas here and there, but I'm keen to find out from others who have already done this.

Here's som questions. Feel free to throw in more info if you have it

Can I buy a complete lift kit? If so where?

Are there many major modifications needed to the wiring and brake lines?

Will I need to modify the trans tunnel or console so the lower shifter doesn't foul the hole?

Given that I'm a mechanic by trade, how long do you think the conversion would take if I was doing in it in a decent workshop?

    Cheers

    Boxer

you can by a 2 1/2 inch body lift from lra but dont know if they do a inch one there kit comes with everything needed(seat belt extensions, brake line extansions, bracket to move plastic around fan and links to move gear shifter)the bumper bar and rear bar will have a gap after you do it
as a mech you should do it in under a day,i have a 2inch b/L done and it has been great so far

Why 1" hardly seems worth it...

What are you hoping to achieve?

LRAutomotive does a complete kit but dear, you'll need extended brake lines and a tranfer case lever extension

Can be done in half a day, if you know what your doing, Seeing as your grren, allow a full day

Buy a vacuum bleeder, they're great

Oh and the transfer shifter "may" require either some heat or just spline adjustment depending on how lucky you are

Remember to raise your bars as it looks foul not done

Why is it that you want a body lift?

Most of the time they dont do a hell of a lot unless your running 35" rubber and then you will have to cut and flare the guards as well.

Unless you have already done it, I would consider a spring lift first and then do the guard cut and flare and then see if you need to go the body lift.

Im of the opinion that a BL does very little for a lot of work thats all.

BUT if you go that way you can just cut alloy blocks from round stock and drill a centre hole on a lathe and then cut them in the length you are wanting to go up.

Then you need the extended brake lines, seat belt extensions, steering shaft extension, TC shifter modification, Bull bar mod (if fitted), rear bar mod and then anything else that I have forgotten about.

The easiest way to fit the blocks is to loosen the bolts off 1 side and remove them from the other.

Jack the side that has no bolts until you can slide the block in and fit longer bolts but dont tighten them.

Remove the bolts from the other side and do the same.

Once your happy that everything is sitting right, tighten all the body mount bolts.

Fit all the ancillery bits and bobs and bobs your uncle.

As Matt said, if youve done it before it can be done in a few hours but for the first time I would allow a couple of days.

    And Vac bleeders are great

I fitted my 2 inch body lift myself. sourced most of the parts locally but got the seat belt extenders from the UK, and wasnt that dear. The whole lot cost me about $300 I think.

took me about 6 hrs to fit it all on my own.

LRA kit is comprehensive but around the $650 mark.

A spring lift does not allow bigger tyres unless you drop your bump stops or stuff up your articulation. It also increases the angle of drive lines causing viabrations and vague driving.

A body lift leaves all the drive angles the same, leaves your articulation unchanged, and keeps the centre of gravity a lot lower.

You do not need to extend brakes lines, only move the mounting points. Should not need to change steering shaft with a 2 inch lift. TC shifter just needs an extension added, but the hole in the tunnel may need to be a bit bigger. The alteration that has not been mentioned relates to the radiator fan and/or radiator.
