Yep, the bumper is all steel with a plastic cover over the middle part.
As mentioned before there are also plastic endcaps that your bumper is missing, and a plastic valance that runs along below the bumper (also missing).

Spotlight mounting will probably have to be done into the steel bumper.

Steel under plastic, I ran two angled brakets out through the grill until I got the bull bar on the front.

As for tank size I would get 850-900 on a tank pushing it (auto) and found the last 10 litres were a pain to put in, Trickle fed but for highway use, I like to see the fuel in the tube.;)

I agree, same experience with mine. Never got more than 70 litres into it even after days on the warning light. Get easy 750k between fills.

You must have left yesterday as I dropped in to see you. In my disco1 the best I got was just over 1,000 kms between fills, it took on 82 litres odd both times and I filled up before the blue light came on. That was from Kulgera to Katherine, a lot of it at night, travelling at 100kmh with 2 adults one child and a lot of camping gear. The road is rather flat!!

There is an item called a mini bar, the cops use them on most of the general duties cars to hang there lights on. They don't look to bad and i've seen them at repco and super cheap auto for $79????. Safe travelling.

I am regularly getting between 9 and 10.5 l/100km from my '96 TDI. i.e. 800+ kms from a tank (89 litres). I usually average around 900-1000kms a week.

Thanks muchly for all the info guys. Sounds as though the Disco has a fair range on it even with the standard tank.
I think I'll just mount the spotties through the plastic into the steel bumpertt. I'll make a custom ally bar for it when I get it up to the top end.

I'm starting to really look foward to the trip, I've lined up a co-driver so it should be a leisurely drive home.
