If you were to park on the Hastings/Dandenong Road for 24 hours & counted the LPG tankers heading out of Hastings you will hit triple figures before 20 hours.
These tankers are loading LPG at the ESSO BHP facility. Esso refine the LPG from the natural gas before its used in Melbourne. Kleenheat Gas do the same in Perth ( & ship the Butane to overseas markets)
Oh and yes, its also a petroleum by product- about 20% of the market.

I found it hard to beleive also, but that is what was told to us while doing the course. The course was the St Johns Ambulance Senior Fist Aid Course.
From my original post i guess you can gather im not a LPG person, but each to there own. Dont mean to offend anyone that loves their LPG. Just my opinion, but that doesnt mean im right. We use our disco mainly for travelling and it returns a consistant 13-14 l/100. So using Jeep boys calculations above it costs me just over a dollar more compared to LPG to travel 100kms. So based on an average of 20000kms a year thats a saving of just over 200 bucks a year. If i were to drive it constantly in the city then i understand LPG would have a much greater saving, but id still rather just buy a smaller car to run around the city with than convert to LPG.

And Big Guy surely you know what i mean by cooked with timber. Maybe it didnt make sense the way i wrote it. Surely a steak cooked over some hot timber coals tastes better than flame grilled by LPG on your bbq? You cant beat a nice open fire and cooking your meal on a grill over the timber coals.

My post was just to clarify that LPG is not the same gas that australia has in abundance. Then i added a few bits. Again dont mean to offend just posted my opinion. Anyone considering LPG should do there homework fully and know everything about it. And yes i agree to some/alot of people LPG offers a big saving.

my d1 3.5 manual will get 400/450km out of a full tank of petrol running 32inch mud terrian on road trips,in the bush with the simex on i get 200km,:(
and with the topic of lpg was speaking to the ex owner of lpgas1 and he rekons aus has about 500 hundred years of usable gas

Well i stand corrected then. I never knew that and ive learnt something today. Ill go stand in the corner now.

We're OK for gas for a long long time to come.
Instead of standing in a corner, research statistics of LPG vehicles incinerating occupants Vs petrol.
Much better use of your time.:)

As punishment ive gone out and washed the wifes disco that i got all dirty playing in the mud on the weekend. :D
As for the fire bit, thats only what i was told at the course. I found it hard to beleive but they said emergancy workers are told the same. It would be interesting to know if there are any emegency workers on this forum that could answer as to whether they are told that.

i was told for a lpg tank to explode the pressure on the outside needs to be greater then the inside of the tankand would take a very large crash for it to explode,a lpg tank is also around 4mm thicker then a petrol tank

As an ex-emergency worker ( firey ) I've never heard of any of the services being instructed to stand clear and wait for the big red truck to come. I think that in most cases instinct would take over and you would do what was necessary to get the patient out of trouble. As it would stand if there was a serious leak, ignition sources would be removed ( disconnect battery )whilst being drenched in a mist then patient removed as quickly and safely as possible. These sorts of jobs are a bugger on a winters night.

like i said i was only going of what everyone on here has said they get, i will be using it as a daily driver but like i say horses for courses for me gas would best the best option dollar wise just thought that it would be a good idea to try put together what i have gathered and save everyone else trying to do the figures

Gas or diesel.
Diesel is good for long distance and torque and simplistic (in most cases) mechanicals.

Petrol is cheaper, way more around and if or when the day comes for wrecking, you will get good money for gas system and motor as often motor can be rebuilt c relatively cheaply and gas systems tanks can be retested and used again.

LPG is a by product that used to be burned off by refineries until they received heavy penalties for doing so.
Than at least here in OZ some 24 years ago cars paid 6c/L at brompton, at the end of the month had to go to Port Adelaide and paid some sort of Tax implications.
That changed as it became more popular and Being a by product still has not changed.

O.K now it costs more, gets smelly egg additive added so we can detect a leak somewhere and its consistence is far from perfect, but what the heck, its saving us money, the enviroment for less polution and much less the pollution by the refinery because it now no longer has to burn it off.

How times change.

Natural gas on the other hand is a different kettle of fish.
It occurs naturally and burns even cleaner, we have many years in reserves and thats it.


Mate, just get a V8, put it on gas if it does not have it already and enjoy.
Trips down the beach are now no longer a big expense.
