How many K's is too many

    Hi
I am coming back to the light side and looking to get a discovery after a brief go with something Japanese. Had one in the UK and loved it.
My question is, is 250,000 k's too many for a 1997 TDI 300 SE as in is it past it's usable life?
The car has almost full service history and I am told had all belts changed at correct times, but I am yet to inspect books.
    Any thought would be appreciated.

Hi Mate , i have a disco of the same age K's and motor . I have had trouble with mine but i'm starting to think it wasn't looked after as well as the last owner had said . I don't think that 250,000 is to many . My theory is if you look after it . it will look after you . I had some dill put gearbox oil in the box instead of the ATF it's meant to have . I'm replacing the front wheel bearings as one fell to bits on me and my 300tdi is due for the belt change . Other than that i love my disco and can't wait to get it out the bush .

250,000k's is only 155,000 miles (You'll understand it more in miles coming from the UK! )
That's hardly anything for a "well looked after" diesel, of any make and model....

When I had my 300TDi back in blighty I was under good authority that they were good for about 350,000 miles (560,000k's for the Aussies! ) if properly maintained with regular service intervals and some TLC.

Mate's has done 500,000kms and still going strong despite him being slack with servicing and not changing injectors (at least not in past 200K kays)! I guess with the variable build quality of LRs, sometimes you get lucky!

As with almost any Landrover, condition (and service history) is more important than actual kilometre figure. I would certainly not discount one with that mileage, but as with any second hand vehicle, particularly a relatively older one, check condition (and history as far as you can) carefully.

interesting, my 95 tdi really started to run well AFTER 450000ks.It had over560ks when traded,(100 when bought)and was still going strong.Normal servicing, and mostly towing camper trailers and rather large boats.
Only odd problem was some clown also filled gearbox with hd90.Had a bit of fun cleaning it out, otherwise all good. Oh and clutch pivot replaced at 490ks

    Thumbs up

Our early 94 300Tdi has 285K on it & is reliable (touch wood). It has a pretty complete service history and seems well looked after.

I just had the timing belt replaced. A recored radiator was put in & with a mod to the baffle plate (supposed to be better for hot Australian summers than the original radiator baffle plate)...these were preventative maintenance, it wasn't actually running hot or using coolant (cheaper to do while the engine is in pieces for the timing belt).

I'm told that the only thing 300Tdi's don't like is getting hot. Ours has certainly been good to us so far.

    Cheers
    Paul.
