    Slipping out of lo-range difflock ?

    My car ( D1 TDi manual ) has started to occassionally slip out of low-range difflock mode, back into neutral, therefore no drive.
    It never used to do this. I's a bit of a concern when it happens going up a steep hill.
    High range is fine.
    I've just had the clutch done - is it possible that a linkage has been bent or something has been forgotten when they have bolted enerything back in place ? It feels like there is not the same the detent or resistance holding the lever in place.

    I'd probably say this is the first place to be looking - especially if the gearbox has been out and may be sitting a mm or two from where it was. Hopefully it'll be an adjustment on the lever and something damaged.

    I remember this happened to me when first I had my D1 V8. Took it to my friendly LR guru who said to keep pressure on the Lo lever and let the clutch up a little to make sure it engaged the detent, which worked but eventually had it adjusted a little better to suit.

    may be the transfer lever is resting against the hole in the floor when in low range and is being pushed out of gear when worked a bit harder. Can be fixed for no cost, but takes a few hours to do it. You need to take your console out, remove the rubber boot around the transfer lever. Undo the two clips holding the selecter rod to the lever, move the lever back slightly then do it all up again. There is a more detailed write up in my members page - subtle D1.

    had the same thing on my 93 tdi.diff would engage and light would come on but as soon as any severe pressure was placed onto driveline the diff would fly out with a large bang,i had to get under the vehicle and undo the small c shaped linkage and engage the diff manually to get back onto a formed road[ 13mm spanner from memory]it uurned out that the shaft going into the transfer case was partially siezed from non use and i had to pull the consul etc to free it up.try this site for some other suggestions.     Thanks all, at least it seems like there are some adjustments that can be done and it's not the T-case itself.
    I'll put the word on my mech. to fix it as seems everything was not tested properly after replacing the clutch.

    Mine does this occasionaly

    Hi there,

    My 98 Defender used to do this which is definitely not great when going up a gnarly hill.

    With used it has improved and I also remember to move forward in low range for a bit and check the lever is fully engaged.

    This has prevented it happening again.

    Just thought I would add my experiences but it sounds like you will have it resolved soon.
