hi
hey guys, i recently bought myself a 1995 Landrover Discovery TDI, this is my first diesel and i was wondering what are the main issues with these engines/driveline, ive read that its important to replace the timing belt every 60-80thousand kms so i'll look into getting that replaced in the next week or so,
so can anyone tell me anything else i should consider? ie: what oem parts should i replace with aftermarket or "better" parts, etc
I've also found that the front two doors and the rear door/gate needs new door lock springs, im assuming that it wouldnt be too hard to replace.
the accessories the Disco currently has
Bull bar
Snorkel
Driving lights
Dual Batteries
Wiring is already set up for UHF, so all i need to do is get the UHF, plug it in and im set
Please get back to me with some good advice, as i would really like to enjoy the landrover experience and hopefully stay with this brand

Looks great.
My favourite michelin tyres.
just do what you can afford.
Get air con serviced, tranny and check battery, they usually are neglected in my experience.
than go drive its legs off.
Great car for not a lot of $$$.

Looks good. Mine is completely stock - wish it had your bullbar and snorkel 
The timing belt isn't hard to do yourself - especially if you've replaced timing belts on other motors. Plenty of good info here on how to do it.
The door lock spring seems to be a common problem. I've got a couple of springs ordered so I can fix the back door on mine. I ordered mine from a UK Ebay seller (a search on here should give you a link). I didn't check if they are available locally here as it was easy to order online.
There are quite a few posts around recommending jobs to do to a used 300tdi, but a lot is going to depend on whether you have service history, what other work you are doing, and whether you are doing it yourself or paying someone else.
Most people would also recommend fitting a coolant alarm.
I've had mine for a month now (97 model), but it came without any books. I've done the following to give myself a new maintenance "baseline":
- Changed timing belt and idler/crank pulleys.
- Had radiator rodded. Was 30% blocked so worth the $100 do do it.
- Changed leaking 'P' gasket
- Flushed the intercooler
- Removed sump and resealed
- Engine oil and oil/fuel/air filters
- Trans oil and filters
- Diff and transfer case oils
Still to do:
- Swivel oils
- Grease driveshaft uni's
- Remove and clean fuel sedimenter bowl
- Replace rear door lock spring
- install coolant alarm
- Whole stack of other little bits and pieces as I get time to tinker, but nothing major.
I started off mainly just to do the timing belt and change all oils, but doing the radiator and P gasket and flushing the intercooler made sense while I was there.
Definitely much more responsive once I put it all back together. Not sure if it was one thing in particular or just a combination of air filter, intercooler flush and new timing belt, but it goes a lot better now.

wow there is a bit of work for me to do...
i might see how much it costs for a full service so i can also set a baseline to where the engine is at, and what needs attention..
any idea how much it would cost if i was to pay a place (4x4 mechanic etc) to service the car? Engine oil and filter, fuel filter, greases, diffs, gbox & t'fer-case
just curious thats all
