Sleeping in a D1

Had a bit of a measure up tonight, and the dimensions for a piece of ply to suit are pretty friendly.
If I make some drawers for the back, or use boxes of the right height to match the folded down rear seats then a half sheet of ply will completely fill the gap between the boxes and the front seats (once its trimmed).

If I then cut and hinge the ply lengthwise, when its folded in half it will fit nicely across on top of the boxes/drawers for travelling.

Possibly this is the first time ever that the size of material I need is JUST SMALLER than a standard sheet size. Usually I seem to need 2 sheets of anything as the size I want is about 50mm bigger than standard!!

Now - to find a cheap piece of that lightweight stiff Asian ply - the stuff that almost feels like it has a balsa core.

I went to sleep in the back of a Disco once but the bouncers kicked me out.:p:p:p

I would be most interested in some pics of the completed setup as that sounds like a great option for when camping overnight with just my two boys.

i bought a 3 man tent , 2 mats , 2 -5 sleeping bags and some decent tent pegs for just over $100 . Ray's tent city had a good sale on at the time :D.

Do you have any special way of getting a decent flat area to sleep on, or just like others have suggested and lay the back seats down and fill up in front and behind them with gear?

Been busy with other projects for the last couple of months, but thought I had better get on with this as the March trip to Tassie is rapidly coming up.

I picked up a couple of lengths of cubelok and some joiners on the weekend, and a couple of pieces of construction ply to go with some leftovers I had in the shed. Still a bit of finishing to do, but thought I'd post a couple of piccy's at this stage.

Considerations behind the frame dimensions :
1. So that the height matches the folded down seats and the center console storage compartment. The sheets of ply rest nicely across all three areas (console, seats, platform).
2. It fits behind my cargo barrier when its installed (not fitted for trips when we plan to sleep in it).
3. Once the seats are up, the loose ply sheets fold up and store on top of the cubelok platform.

If anyone is interested I'll try and get a simple drawing done with dimensions.

Still to do:
Hinge the 2 loose sheets of ply together
Cover with carpet or something thats friendly to inflatable mattress.
Attach frame to floor
Eventually replace the plastic boxes with some proper drawers.

I have slept in My 94 V8 with my Wife for three weeks on a Cape York Trip.
We had a tent also that could attach to the vehicle as a change room if required or we could sleep in the tent.
Wife requested to be off the ground from cairns on.
Made a storage rack that had a custom wood top that hinged just level with wear the back seats should have been.(removed for trip)
To flip this forward we had to slide the front seat forward it sat part way over the centre console. A foam mattress on top.(feather Doona for Cover when cold)
We also had security screens that went into the rear windows allowed for ventilation.
Storage boxes and clothes under the bed. Green flip down tarp to cover bumper and dirt when we opened door.
