    Looking at a D1 V8.

Hi, im new to all things Land Rover and im going to look at a 1997 Discovery V8 manual with 160,000kms on the weekend. Aside from rust and oil leaks, is there anything else i should be looking out for that could be a problem?

    Keithy,
The first thing I'd be checking with a V8 Disco of that mileage is for sticking valves. Find a long steepish hill that you can do at least 80km'hr up for about a km or two.
3rd or 4th gear, flat throttle, if the vehicle starts to slow down/ loose power after a short time, and appears to be missing, (IE a shaking gearlever and obvious miss in the exhaust) then it IS NOT spark plugs, It IS NOT in need of an injector clean or has a blocked filter, it IS suffering from the classic sticking exhaust valve syndrome, and will cost about $1500 to $1800 to rectify, both heads off and recoed, possibly replacing all the exhaust guides too.

I mentioned the spark plugs and injectors etc, as these have all been tried on with customers of mine in the past who were told by their servo mechanics that they need to spend $150 on an injector clean, or a set of plugs, leads and a dizzy cap, all to no avail We then overhauled the heads , so all that other work was for nothing. One guy even had ALL his injectors replaced at considerable expence, which obviously DIDN'T fix the problem...

Any car needs to be checked unless you know what you are looking at.

Well had a look at the car and decided to buy it. No leaks, runs well, no rust. Only minor issues are one of the power window rollers is broken and the tailgate will only open with the key.
