    D1 Starting Problems

Hi guys. I need your help again. Sometimes when I go to start my 98 300tdi it doesnt start first time then it takes a few minutes before it decides to start. The engine is turning over just not firing. Once it starts it runs perfect. This has only happened twice but when it did it today I had just filled up with Diesel and had a few cars waiting behind me. NOT HAPPY. I only put new fuel and air filters in it in September. So has anyone got any ideas???????

    Thanks
    Jodie

My 1st thought was glow plugs,
But if you were filling up, the motor would have still been hot.

Next I would check the lift pump.
on the right hand sid of the motor

    Hey Jodie,

Maybe check the wiring and the connection going to the stop solinoid on the back of the injector pump. I had similar problems with mine a while back which ended up being the wire was broken so ended up running new wire to it.

I'd be thinking fuel shut off soloniod or the wire going to it.

On the rear side of the injector pump there is a wire all on it's own which seems to go into a hole in the injector pump.

Make sure that is tight and the wire is in good condition.

It could also be some captive air in the fuel filter but they normally clear them selves pretty well.

It could also be the ignition switch or shut off sol relay not working properly.

On your Disco, crank but no go sounds like no fuel, so I'd echo mcrover's thought of fuel cut solenoid on the back of the fuel pump.

Lift pump - not involved unless it's p$$$ing out diesel when cranking.

    Cheers

Thanks for the reply's so far. I will get hubby to check that wire on the weekend. Its really hard to find where it is coming from when it doesnt do it all the time! Also I might be picky but when I am holding a steady speed it sometimes feels like it has a slight surge. Could this be anything to do with the other problem? Im getting a little frustrated, I have owned the car for 10 months and it has been the most reliable car Ive owned, so Im hoping this turns out to be something really basic so i can take off road next month. Thanks again. Will let you know how I go.

    Hey Jodie

Can you give a little bit more info on the surging, what does it feel like it's doing, is your Disco an Auto or Manual. Also have you cleaned out the fuel sedimenter, a lot of people don't know about this.

It is really hard to explain what the surging is like. It sort of like when wind hits the car. It just feels like it is losing power a little bit. It is an auto. We cleaned the sediment thing around August. Maybe I should do it again. Thanks heaps for the reply.
